Hello everyone, I recently started experiencing an annoying creaking noise with my Ikea BILLY bookcase that occurs with even the slightest movement or load. Since I’m not sure how to fix these sounds without damaging screws or wood, I’m asking specifically: What methods are available to reliably eliminate creaking in a BILLY bookcase without affecting the surface or the stability of the furniture? I would like to know if there are any special lubricants, pads, or adjustments that can stop the creaking without leaving marks or restricting functionality. I’m looking forward to helpful tips and possibly recommendations for products that work particularly well. Thanks in advance!

Hello derrickn50,

First of all, it’s great that you explained your issue so clearly and in detail – that makes it much easier to help! To eliminate the creaking sound on the BILLY shelf without causing any damage, there are a few proven steps you can take. You should start by precisely locating where the noise is coming from. Often, the creaking occurs at the joints between the shelves and side panels or because the screws have loosened over time.

A mild but very effective trick is to use silicone spray or special furniture wax. These products are ideal because they not only lubricate but also protect against moisture without damaging the finish or the wood. It’s important to apply them sparingly and wipe off any excess quickly to avoid leaving unsightly residues.

Additionally, you can carefully tighten the screws, but only enough to avoid compressing the wood too much. As an alternative, small felt or foam strips can be helpful; these are placed at the contact points between wooden surfaces to reduce friction and thus prevent creaking. These strips are inexpensive and won’t cause any damage.

If you want, I can provide more detailed information about suitable products or guide you on which spots to check. Good luck — this is usually easy to fix with simple methods!

Exactly, silicone spray is my favorite. Just spray it lightly, and the rattling stops. Tighten the screws, but be careful!

Hello derrickn50,

to address the issue of squeaking in your BILLY shelf methodically, I recommend a structured approach that aims to avoid any damage. First, it is important to understand exactly which factors can cause squeaking and how they specifically affect the BILLY shelf.

1. Identify the cause: Squeaking usually results from friction between two wooden or metal surfaces or from slight movement at screw connections. Test whether the noise occurs mainly under load (when the shelf is fully loaded or moved) or already with a light touch.

2. Check the screws: Over-tightening can crush the wood, while loose screws can cause play. Start by gently tightening your screws if needed to reduce unwanted rattling. Use an appropriate screwdriver and avoid a cordless drill with too much torque.

3. Use sliding materials: To reduce friction points, use, for example, PTFE tape (Teflon tape) or thin felt pads that you can place at internal contact points. These are invisible and do not affect the appearance or stability.

4. Care with suitable lubricants: Silicone spray is effective because it is not sticky and leaves minimal residue. Make sure to clean the areas lightly beforehand so no dirt gets trapped, which could worsen the problem.

5. Particularity of BILLY: Some BILLY versions have shelves that expand and contract due to temperature and humidity changes. Small movements can cause squeaking. Ensuring the shelves are not too tightly fitted can help here.

One more question: How old is your shelf? Does it have compartments with or without a back panel? The more precisely you can specify this, the more targeted the advice can be.

I hope this detailed description helps you. If you like, I can also provide step-by-step instructions. 🙂
