Hello everyone,

I’m moving soon and I have some IKEA Platsa furniture, which luckily is modular and quite flexible. However, I’m unsure about the best way to protect these pieces during transport to avoid scratches, dents, or any damage.

Since the individual components are rather light and often have large surfaces made of MDF panels, I wonder if it’s enough to simply wrap them with blankets or bubble wrap, or if special preparations are needed—such as disassembling the furniture parts, removing the back panels, or securely fastening the doors and drawers.

Does anyone have experience protecting Platsa furniture during a move? Which packing materials do you recommend? Should I completely take the furniture apart, or is partial disassembly sufficient?

I’m looking forward to helpful tips and practical advice!

Hello Komar70,

To protect the IKEA Platsa furniture during the move, I recommend the following approach:
- Always remove doors and drawers or at least secure them firmly to prevent them from opening and getting damaged.
- The back panels, usually made of thin hardboard, should be removed if possible and transported separately, as they are prone to breaking.
- If space is limited, individual units can be disassembled, although this is not always necessary with Platsa if handled carefully during transport.
- Use bubble wrap to protect surfaces; thin blankets alone often don’t provide enough cushioning against impacts.
- Secure all parts well with stretch film to prevent scratches.

Also important: Transport the furniture upright and avoid stacking if possible. Otherwise, the modular design helps to secure the parts in an organized way.

Hello Komar70,

I’m adding some more detailed tips, as Platsa furniture does have delicate aspects that are often overlooked during moving.

First of all: Platsa cabinet units are mostly made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with thin hardboard back panels, which are very prone to breaking. The following steps should be considered already during disassembly and packing:

- Carefully remove the back panels: These are often fixed only with small nails or staples and break easily. After removing the back panel, it’s best to store it flat or protect it separately with cardboard.
- Remove doors and drawers: These parts must be securely fixed or removed to prevent rattling or banging during transport. Doors can also be individually wrapped with stretch wrap to avoid scratches.
- When disassembling, be sure to sort screws and store them in labeled bags—Platsa reassembly is often only possible if all fasteners are complete.
- Surface protection: Bubble wrap has proven effective here, as it provides shock absorption and scratch protection. Especially with white lacquered or foil-covered surfaces, cracks and chipping are common damage sources with improper handling.
- Transport furniture mostly upright to maintain stability and avoid unnatural stresses that could weaken the joints.

One question: Are you planning to fully reassemble the furniture, or would you like to keep as many modules together as possible? For complete disassembly, you’ll of course need to stay well organized to make reassembly easier.

Best regards

Here is a structured summary for protecting IKEA Platsa furniture during a move:

- Fully disassembling the furniture is ideal but not strictly necessary. If possible, remove or secure doors and drawers.
- Always remove back panels, as they are very thin and fragile.
- Use bubble wrap for delicate surfaces. It provides better impact protection than standard moving blankets.
- Pack the furniture so it cannot shift during transport. Stretch wrap helps to secure the pieces.
- Transport cabinet units upright to avoid compromising the stability of joints.

Partial disassembly significantly reduces the risk of damage but requires additional effort.

My recommendation: For larger furniture pieces, inform the moving service about the modular design of Platsa – this often improves handling and helps prevent damage.

This is the most important point. Back panels can be easily damaged.

Also, secure or remove doors and drawers. Bubble wrap provides good protection; blankets alone are not enough.

Transport everything upright and secure it properly.
