Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to best protect the surfaces of my IKEA Besta cabinet from scratches and stains. Since the material is usually coated particleboard or MDF with a melamine resin foil, I’m interested in which methods or care products are effective for keeping the surface in good condition over time. My goal is to withstand everyday wear, such as placing objects on it, as well as occasional cleaning, without causing damage. Does anyone have experience with protective films, special cleaning or care products, or preventive measures like mats or padding to help keep the surfaces free from visible signs of use? I look forward to practical tips or recommendations that have proven to be neither excessive nor ineffective.

I would recommend simply attaching felt pads under all items placed on the surface. This will prevent scratches caused by sliding. Also, wipe occasionally with a damp cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners. This will help maintain the surface well.

That’s all well and good, but honestly: how much protection do you really want? With furniture like Besta, some wear and tear is normal and even desirable to emphasize its natural character. Under protective films, everything sounds perfect, but the question is whether it might actually disrupt the overall look.

I often see people becoming too focused on perfect surfaces – and forgetting that furniture is also a functional item. Stains usually come out if you act quickly enough, and protective films don’t completely prevent scratches, they only reduce abrasion. If appearance is your main concern, glass tops or well-known protective films are an option. Otherwise, I recommend simply wiping down occasionally with a damp cloth and not overdoing it.

For surface maintenance of the IKEA Besta, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Scratch protection: Use felt or rubber pads under items that are frequently moved, such as decorations or electronic devices.
- Stain protection: Immediately wipe up liquids with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners that could damage the melamine surface.
- Cleaning agents: Use mild soap solutions or special plastic cleaners with a neutral pH.
- Optional protective films: High-quality, thin protective films (e.g., polyurethane) can be applied to mechanically protect the surface, but they must be properly adhered to prevent bubbling or later detachment.
- Preventive measures: Avoid placing hot or very heavy objects directly on the surface without protection.

These recommendations are based on material properties and practical experience in furniture care. A combination of careful use and regular, gentle cleaning ensures long-lasting value retention.
