Hello everyone! I am considering changing the color of one of my Billy bookshelves and am looking for an affordable way to cover or repaint the current surface without having to completely sand or repaint the shelf. I am especially interested in which materials or products work well to create a smooth and durable finish that differs from the typical expensive furniture coatings. Does anyone have experience with such DIY solutions for Billy bookshelves? What type of paint, spray film, or adhesive film would you recommend that is cost-effective yet still delivers a good result? I am also open to any tips on the best approach to avoid a blotchy or uneven finish. Thanks in advance!

Hello Yasar,

To cheaply cover a BILLY shelf with color, films (e.g., self-adhesive furniture foil) are a practical option. They are affordable, easy to apply, and removable without residue. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface before applying so that the film adheres well.

Alternatively, acrylic paints or special chalk paints work well and can be applied easily with a brush or roller. It is recommended to do a light intermediate sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) – this improves adhesion without completely sanding down the surface.

As a material, I would recommend a high-quality acrylic or acrylic enamel paint, which offers good coverage and durability. Ready-made spray paints from hardware stores are also suitable since they can be applied thinly and evenly, but preparation is even more important here (free of dust and grease).

If you don’t want to spend too much and the result is primarily decorative, film is the cheapest and quickest option. For more long-lasting durability, paint or chalk paint is better.

I would recommend using a matte spray film. It is affordable, easy to apply, and provides good coverage. Clean the surface beforehand and lightly sand it. Done.

Hello Yasar, I’d like to give you a brief guide on how to change the color of your BILLY shelf without spending too much:

1. Cleaning: First, remove dust and grease using an all-purpose cleaner. A clean surface is essential.

2. Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with 180-220 grit sandpaper, without completely removing the wood. This is important to ensure better adhesion of the new paint or foil.

3. Primer: If you choose paint or chalk paint, apply an affordable adhesion primer. It improves adhesion and ensures an even color result.

4. Paint selection: For budget-friendly options, I recommend acrylic or chalk paints from a hardware store. They are inexpensive, low odor, and dry quickly. Spray foil is also suitable if you want smooth, even layers.

5. Application: Depending on the product, apply several thin coats and allow each to dry thoroughly in between. This helps avoid drips and uneven spots.

6. Protection: Finally, you can apply a matte or satin clear coat finish to make the color more durable.

Common mistakes include applying layers that are too thick or painting in overly humid conditions.

This way, you can achieve a good result with minimal effort and cost.

Thanks for the tip about furniture films; that sounds interesting. I’m curious whether these films stick well to the smooth melamine coating on the BILLY shelf, or if you need to do something special beforehand? Do the edges require special treatment to prevent them from peeling off quickly?

Also, what do you think about inexpensive spray films, like those from paint shops? Are they durable enough for everyday use, or are they mostly just decorative?

Some additional notes on the points mentioned:

Self-adhesive furniture films generally adhere well to melamine or plastic surfaces, but you should make sure the surface is free of grease and dust. A cleaning cloth with alcohol is effective for removing residual grease.

The edges are actually the weak points, as air bubbles often form there or the film can peel off. Using a hairdryer to warm the film helps make it more flexible and allows the edges to be properly adjusted.

Spray films (e.g., Plasti Dip) are flexible and easy to remove, but they are better suited for temporary applications or surfaces that are not heavily used. For shelves that see frequent use, paint or film tends to be more durable.

If you want long-lasting results, I recommend lightly sanding the surface combined with a high-quality acrylic paint plus clear coat. This way, you’ll be on the safe side.
