Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the optimal care of Ikea Metod countertops, specifically the models with a laminated surface. Since these countertops are a more affordable yet functional option, I want to keep them in good condition for as long as possible. Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which cleaning products are best suited to gently clean the surface without causing damage?
- Are there any special care tips to help prevent scratches, water stains, or discoloration?
- How should I deal with tougher stains like dried dough or coffee?
Additionally, I would like to know if you notice any differences in maintenance between the various surface types (white, wood effect, or textured laminate). I look forward to your experiences and recommended methods!

first of all, respect for your detailed question – it really shows that your Metod is important to you! 😉
For cleaning: I swear by lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap on a soft cloth. That usually works perfectly fine for the films. Avoid scrubbing hard or using aggressive cleaners – they can quickly damage the surface and cause it to fade.
Here’s another tip: don’t use abrasive sponges, as they leave tiny scratches – which are harmful to films! If there’s something really stubborn, start with a microfiber cloth and give the cleaner some time to work.
Warm water with dish soap helps here, soak if needed, then wipe off gently. Basically, avoid anything that would roughen the surface.
Overall, patience is key!
Good luck & keep at it

Hello kufinn,
I would like to add some systematic and structured information to your question:
- Cleaning:
- Use mild cleaning agents, such as pH-neutral all-purpose cleaners or a mild dish soap. Avoid cleaners containing solvents or harsh chemicals.
- A soft cloth or microfiber cloth is essential to protect the surface.
- Protection and Precautions:
- Use cutting boards to prevent deep scratches. The Metod panels are not necessarily scratch-resistant.
- Avoid prolonged contact with standing liquids, as this can cause discoloration, especially on light-colored surfaces.
- Heavier Soiling:
- For dried-on dough or coffee stains, it is recommended to soak with water first, then gently wipe with a soft cloth.
- Stubborn stains can be treated with a baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with water to form a paste), but always test carefully in an inconspicuous area.
- Different Surfaces:
- For wood-look surfaces, avoid grease-dissolving cleaners, as they can damage the appearance and leave residues.
- Textured foils can trap more dirt in recesses; occasional brushing with a soft brush is advisable.
Summary:
The goal is gentle, regular cleaning with respect to the material. Aggressive scrubbing or incorrect cleaning agents can damage the foil covering and affect the appearance.
I generally recommend the following: wipe the surface immediately after use with a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid placing sharp-edged objects directly on the panel without protection.
If you have questions about specific products or procedures, I am happy to help!

Good morning,
I would also like to share my experience, as I have Metod countertops with a laminated surface in my kitchen.
Regarding cleaning, I recommend:
- Always use only slightly damp cloths to prevent the laminate from swelling or peeling.
- For stains caused by food, such as coffee or dried dough, it helps to cover the stain first with a damp cloth and let it sit for a short time. Then gently wipe it off.
I agree with this, but such methods should be used sparingly and with caution to avoid damaging the surface.
To prevent scratches:
- Always use cutting boards!
- Never place hot pots directly on the countertop, as heat can damage the surface.
Finally, a tip for daily care:
- After use, wipe the countertops damp and then dry. This prevents water spots and stains from forming from the start.
If anyone has questions about cleaning specific stains, feel free to ask—I’m happy to help!
