Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy cabinet and am a bit dissatisfied with the doors. They especially creak and stick when opening and closing, which can be quite annoying over time. Additionally, the doors don’t seem to fit perfectly flush – there are slight gaps that are clearly visible. My question is: How can I technically and practically improve the doors of my Billy cabinet so that they run smoothly again, make no noise, and close properly? Are there any special adjustment tips or better hinges that I could use? I would really appreciate practical advice and explanations, especially if you have had similar experiences yourself.
Hello Mar46, I completely understand how frustrating it can be when doors don’t function properly. I had a similar issue and only solved it by trying out a few different methods. It’s important that the hinges are correctly positioned and the doors are precisely aligned; otherwise, gaps and creaking will remain.

How can I technically and practically improve the doors of my Billy wardrobe so that they run smoothly again, make no noise, and close tightly?
Mar46, it’s great that you’re thinking about improving your Billy cabinet doors! :-) I had the exact same issue, and here’s my tip: replace the standard hinges with soft-close hinges! This not only makes the doors quieter but also allows them to close much more smoothly, like on clouds. Simply remove the old hinges, install the new ones, and you’re done! 🙂 Also, if the doors aren’t fitting perfectly, you can use fine sandpaper to make slight adjustments or tweak the hinges until everything fits well!
Thanks for the replies so far! @Layla: The idea of using silicone spray sounds interesting. Do you apply it directly to the hinges? Could it cause long-term damage to the metal or the surface? @susar: Soft-close hinges are definitely worth considering. Are there any specific models you would recommend? I’m also curious if the installation is fairly straightforward, as I’m not very experienced with DIY.
To effectively improve the doors of a Billy cabinet, I recommend the following steps: 1) Check the hinge fastenings to ensure all screws are tightened properly – this prevents noise and gaps. 2) For large gaps: the doors are often not perfectly parallel, so fine-tuning the hinges can help, as they are adjustable in several directions. 3) Silicone spray is well suited for lubrication; it leaves no stains and protects metal parts. 4) For soft-close functionality: brands like Hettich or Blum offer easy retrofit hinges with soft-close features that can be installed almost identically. I advise taking measurements beforehand, as not all hinges fit exactly.
