Hello everyone, I am planning to install IKEA Pax doors in my home, but I want to equip them with handles in different colors to give my interior a unique look. My question is: How can these doors be fitted with handles in various colors without compromising functionality and appearance? Are there specific installation methods or recommendations to consider? Perhaps someone has practical experience or tips on the best way to achieve this—especially regarding the attachment of the handles, suitable screws, or possibly alternative types of handles.

Hello Russeldi49,

that’s an interesting question that probably concerns many users. Basically, there are several options for choosing different colored handles for IKEA Pax doors:

- Standard handles: You can order IKEA’s own handles, which are attached with a screw system but usually come in the same color scheme.
- Third-party sizes: There are many third-party handles available offering much more color variety. You just need to pay attention to the hole spacing to ensure the handles fit.
- Painting yourself: Alternatively, you can unscrew the existing handles and repaint them with special paint. Be sure to use high-quality metal or plastic paint.

When installing, be mindful of the screw length, as some doors are made of thinner material and screws that are too long can damage the front. Also important: the handles should all be screwed in evenly, despite the different colors, to achieve a harmonious overall look.

How large is your Pax system and what type of doors do you have? (Sliding doors, folding doors, hinged doors?) This could greatly affect the installation options.

Different handles for Pax can be purchased separately and installed using the appropriate screws. Important: measure the hole spacing and use suitable screws.

Thanks for asking! I have Pax Nexus hinged doors, each about 50 x 236 cm (20 x 93 inches), approximately 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick. I mainly want to install a mix of black and white handles. The handles should look visually different, but the doors still need to stay securely closed. Do you have any tips on how to choose the right screw type? IKEA sells special screws for some accessories, but I’ve also read online about alternative screws from hardware stores.

A very good choice! Here are my recommendations:

- Screws: For the Nexus doors, it’s best to use the screws provided by IKEA, as they are specifically designed for the door thickness and material. Alternatively, metric screws from a hardware store with an M4 size and the matching hole diameter will also work.
- Handles made of metal or plastic: Metal handles are more durable, especially if you use them frequently. Plastic handles are available in larger and more colorful options, but pay attention to their load capacity.
- Mounting aid: A drilling template can help you position the holes precisely for each handle, especially if you want to mix different colors.
- Securing: To prevent screws from loosening over time, use threadlocker, such as Loctite.

If you like, I can provide instructions on how I installed handles myself, including tips on marking the handle positions.

You can simply order the handles individually and install them using standard wood screws. Remember to measure the distance between the holes accurately, as this is important.
