karlkoHello everyone,
I am currently considering using the IKEA Hemnes shelving unit as a base for a custom shelving system. I am particularly interested in how the existing modules and components can be combined or expanded to create a tailor-made and functional system that goes beyond simple use.
I am looking into aspects such as stability, adaptability, expansion options, and especially whether the system integrates well with other IKEA elements or custom-built components.
What experiences do you have with Hemnes as a foundation for custom shelving systems? Are there any tips, proven additions, or specific assembly methods worth knowing to get the most out of the system without compromising stability or design?
I look forward to an engaging discussion!

Hello Karlko,
I would like to respond to your question more structurally about how IKEA HEMNES can serve as a basis for a custom shelving system.
First of all, the HEMNES shelves are very stable due to their solid wood construction and are therefore generally suitable for extensions. However, it is important not to exceed the maximum load capacity of the individual shelves.
1. Modular extensions: HEMNES components can be easily combined – for example, tall and low shelves, drawers, and doors. The consistent dimensions provide a good foundation to add or align additional modules.
2. Custom additions: If you plan to stack or connect shelves with custom-built elements, it is advisable to use appropriate fastening techniques (e.g., brackets, sturdy screws, dowels) and ensure precise material fitting.
3. Combination with other IKEA systems: Here you need to be cautious because HEMNES is a classic solid wood system, while other systems often use particleboard or metal. Still, combinations are possible if you create flexible transitions, such as with overlays or intermediate pieces.
4. Functionality optimization: Additional inserts, boxes, or lighting can be installed using suitable drilling and clamping mechanisms.
In short: HEMNES is a robust foundation that can be expanded into a custom shelving system with some craftsmanship. Pay attention to structural integrity and material compatibility!
If you like, I can later provide some practical examples or assembly tips.

From an objective perspective, giabau’s post already covers the key points:
- The HEMNES shelving unit is made from solid wood, which ensures relatively high load capacity and durability.
- The standard dimensions of the system (shelf width, shelf height) guarantee compatibility within the series.
- Expanding beyond pure IKEA modules requires precise work, as materials and fastening techniques differ.
It is important that structural stability is never overlooked when enhancing customization, especially with assemblies over multiple modules or when heavy items are stored.
Recommendation: additionally use suitable construction brackets, wall anchors (if needed on the wall), and always check IKEA’s load charts for HEMNES before installation. Shelf heights should also be chosen to allow for easy adjustment or expansion later.

reoleon476 Mar 2020 15:36I find this topic really fascinating! 🙂 HEMNES is, to me, one of the most beautiful and versatile series from IKEA, especially because you can customize it so wonderfully.
What I have done myself:
- Assembled several HEMNES bookcases into a large wall unit by connecting them at the top with wooden battens – very stable and looks great!
- Added drawer units in front of the open shelves, creating more storage space for small items.
- Added baseboards to give the unit more design character.
I can only confirm that! In my case, the brackets and screws hold firmly; I would always use at least two screws per connection point and attach small metal plates that can be fixed from behind.
Don’t be discouraged, it’s really very doable!

Interesting approach, but I also see some limitations that should not be overlooked.
- First: While the HEMNES design is timeless, the modular options are relatively limited compared to modular shelving systems like BESTÅ or Ivar.
- Second: The material thickness and fixed mounting method restrict flexibility. Anyone who wants to rearrange frequently may quickly encounter limitations.
- Third: Combining it with other IKEA systems will probably never fit optimally, as the dimensions and mounting methods differ too much.
I agree, but this also means significantly more craftsmanship and effort. For a non-professional, this can be a barrier many do not want to overcome.
Overall: HEMNES as a base is solid, but for a highly customized shelving system, there are better and especially more flexible options.

I definitely want to encourage everyone here! HEMNES is not only sturdy but also visually very appealing, which I personally find important.
My tip:
- Small additions like clamp strips or extra back panels often help make the system more secure.
- Using different heights and widths creates interesting furniture arrangements.
That’s true, but the fun is really in building and customizing together—you learn a lot! And you can always start small—for example, with a single shelf—and then expand.
I combined my HEMNES shelf with plants and LED strips—it looks great and instantly adds more personality to the room!
