RENTILMAN4 Mar 2019 08:43Hello everyone, some time ago I bought an Ikea Pax wardrobe and now I’m wondering how to best maintain it to maximize its lifespan and avoid damaging the material.
Specifically, I’m interested in:
- Which cleaning products are recommended or better to avoid?
- How often should the wardrobe ideally be cleaned?
- Are there any special household products or methods for the doors (e.g., glass, mirror, wooden doors) and the fittings?
- What is the best way to repair scratches and minor damage?
The wardrobe is mainly made of wood-based materials (particleboard) with a white melamine finish. Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!

your question is very well phrased and detailed, which makes it much easier to provide specific advice. I have several Pax wardrobes myself and can answer this from my own experience.
First, regarding cleaning:
- It’s best to use a damp, soft cloth with lukewarm water to remove dust and light dirt.
- For tougher stains, you can use a mild dish soap, but very sparingly, and always follow up by wiping with a damp cloth to avoid leaving any residue.
- Avoid cleaning agents containing alcohol, abrasive cleaners, or strong solvents, as they can damage the melamine coating.
Glass or mirror doors can be cleaned with a regular glass cleaner, but be careful not to let it touch the wood surfaces.
As for frequency: cleaning once a month is usually sufficient, with dusting in between. For hinges and fittings, I recommend lightly oiling them about every six months with a suitable lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) to keep them smooth.
Scratches on melamine are unfortunately difficult to completely polish out, but minor damage can be camouflaged with repair kits available at hardware stores (so-called “furniture repair pens”).
I hope this helps you!

One more tip: Ikea PAX wardrobes are usually quite large. When cleaning, don’t rush; better to do it bit by bit, opening the doors to wipe the edges inside as well. This helps prevent dust buildup in hard-to-reach spots.
Oh, and when lubricating hinges: just a tiny drop of silicone spray is enough, otherwise it can quickly become sticky and attract more dirt. 😉
I think people take the Ikea Pax wardrobe way too seriously when it comes to care. Sure, the melamine surface isn’t the most premium wood, but should that ruin the fun?
The answer is simple: as often as you feel necessary. Some people want everything spotless, others only do a thorough clean once or twice a year. And that’s fine. As long as you don’t use abrasive cleaners or highly concentrated chemicals, the wardrobe can handle it.
Regarding scratches: in my opinion, they actually add character. To me, that’s just an exaggerated sense of caution, like “don’t get even the smallest mark.”
I say: stay relaxed and use the wardrobe, rather than stressing over every little scratch.

In my opinion, they rather emphasize the character.I can understand that, but I also believe everyone should decide for themselves how important the appearance of their furniture is.
Back to practical matters: Especially with melamine, it’s really important to avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, as they can damage the protective layer.
Another point is humidity: The material is sensitive to high moisture levels, so avoid placing the furniture in areas with a lot of steam (e.g., directly next to the bathroom).
If you have dust or lint in the corners, it’s best to use a dry microfiber cloth or a soft brush to prevent scratches.
Regarding hardware maintenance: Applying a bit of lubrication every few months is advisable to keep doors closing smoothly.
If you have any questions, feel free to provide more details, for example, if you have any specific surface finishes.

So: It’s best to place Pax in a well-ventilated area. If you still have moisture issues, you can also put small dehumidifiers inside the cabinet to prevent damage.
Also, if you rearrange things often: Make sure to close the cabinet doors gently. This protects the hinges and the finish.
Good luck with maintaining it!
