Hello everyone,

I am planning to apply a loose laminate on a Kallax carcass panel, but I want to make sure I choose the right adhesive. Specifically, I am looking for an adhesive that provides strong bonding to melamine or particleboard and secures the laminate cleanly without any bubbles. Ideally, the adhesive layer should be flexible enough to withstand slight stresses caused by temperature and humidity changes without cracking or peeling.

Has anyone had experience with specific adhesives for loose laminating KALLAX shelves? Are there any recommendations regarding the type of adhesive (e.g., contact adhesive, liquid membrane, construction adhesive) or brands that work particularly well for this purpose? I am also interested in whether a certain application method (roller, brush, spatula) or surface preparation (sanding, cleaning, priming) might be necessary.

I look forward to your tips and advice!

Hello Popaul,

for a loose lamination on KALLAX panels, a contact adhesive based on neoprene or latex usually works best. It is important that the surface is clean, free of grease, and dry. Light sanding with fine sandpaper can help improve adhesion.

That’s an important point – contact adhesives remain elastic enough when applied correctly to accommodate slight movements. I recommend using light rollers to distribute the adhesive evenly and avoid bubbles.

Additionally, you should apply a thin layer of adhesive to both surfaces, allow it to dry briefly, and then join them precisely. This prevents wrinkles and blistering.

Contact adhesive is the best choice. Important: Apply a thin and even layer to each surface, let it dry, and then press them together. Done.

Hello Popaul,

since you are asking for well-founded recommendations, I would like to go into more detail. The loose lamination on KALLAX is usually done on a melamine particleboard, whose surface texture is quite smooth and not very absorbent due to the melamine coating. The challenge here is to choose an adhesive that takes into account the mechanical and chemical properties of these materials.

First, the types of adhesives:
Contact adhesives (neoprene or latex-based) offer high initial tack and remain flexible, which is helpful with temperature fluctuations. It is important to roughen the bonding surfaces well, preferably with 180-220 grit sandpaper, to reduce gloss and improve adhesion.

Polyurethane-based construction adhesives often improve bond strength but tend to remain rigid, which can promote cracking in flexible laminates. Liquid foil is more suitable for small repair areas.

For application: Using a fine short-pile roller ensures the most even adhesive layer. A brush tends to cause uneven thickness. It is essential to allow the adhesive to dry until it is “finger tacky” (usually 5-10 minutes). Avoid bonding too late, as this significantly reduces adhesion strength.

Regarding preparation: Besides cleaning dust and grease, you can lightly wipe the surface with a universal thinner to remove any residues. Priming is usually not necessary but may be recommended depending on the adhesive (follow manufacturer instructions).

Question: To what extent do you want to laminate the surface loosely? Just over larger areas, or also along edges? The adhesive requirements may vary accordingly.

Hope this helps you!

Yes, a really exciting topic! I recently redid my KALLAX with loose laminate flooring and chose UHU contact adhesive type "Express" – it worked really well! ☺️

The great thing about this adhesive is that it dries quickly but still gives you enough time to position the laminate precisely. I didn’t get any bubbles, and the bond is extremely strong without the laminate slipping later on.

My tip: Make sure to allow enough time for the adhesive to set, and press the laminate down with a rubber roller.

Good luck! It’s going to look great 🙂

Hello Popaul,

I would like to add a short guide based on my experience with loose laminate application on KALLAX:

1. Preparation:
  - Clean the surface with alcohol to remove grease and dust.
  - Lightly sand the surface (grit 220), just enough to remove the gloss.

2. Adhesive selection:
  - Contact adhesive based on neoprene offers the best combination of adhesion and flexibility.
  - I recommend adhesives from Soudal or Pattex, as they have good application properties.

3. Application:
  - Apply the adhesive evenly and as thin as possible with a short-nap roller to both surfaces to be bonded.
  - Let the adhesive dry for 10 to 15 minutes (always follow the manufacturer's instructions).

4. Applying the laminate:
  - Align the laminate and press it down with a rubber roller or a clean roller to avoid air bubbles.

5. Aftercare:
  - For the best results, apply weight to the workpiece after pressing, especially on sensitive areas.

Important: Contact adhesive can only be joined once. Therefore, practice precise positioning beforehand.

This is not entirely correct – contact adhesive usually requires a short drying phase, which makes the bond permanent immediately upon joining. Precise positioning can often be a bit tricky, so practice is helpful.
