Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble my Malm chest of drawers, specifically the drawers, and have done some research beforehand. However, I would be interested to know if anyone in this forum has any valuable tips or tricks for assembling the Malm drawers that go beyond the IKEA instructions. I am particularly concerned about aligning the drawer slides and fitting the drawer fronts correctly, as I worry that if done wrong, the drawers might not run smoothly or could get stuck. Perhaps someone has practical experience with the assembly or advice on troubleshooting if something doesn’t fit quite right. I would appreciate detailed guidance on the order of the individual steps and how to avoid common issues during the build.
The drawer slides should be installed precisely parallel; otherwise, the drawer will quickly jam. Before tightening the screws permanently, check again with a spirit level. When attaching the drawer fronts, make sure the mounting screws are straight—otherwise, the front will hang unevenly.
When assembling the Malm drawers, careful alignment of the drawer slides is especially important. These should be precisely parallel to the dresser frame on all sides to ensure smooth operation. I recommend not fully tightening the screws when attaching the slides at first, but rather screwing them in just lightly. This way, the position can still be adjusted if necessary. Afterwards, check all measurements using a level or ruler, and only then fully tighten the screws.
It is also important to adjust the drawer fronts before final assembly, as small unevenness here can cause significant visual issues. Usually, the front can be raised or lowered slightly using the designated adjustment screws to achieve perfect alignment.
If the drawer does not slide smoothly after installation, the drawer runners should be checked for any dirt or debris that might be obstructing the mechanism.

Hello artur41, I completely understand your concerns. I recently assembled the Malm drawers myself and can offer a few additional tips.
My recommendation: When screwing the side panels together, pay close attention to the exact positioning, as even a few millimeters (inches) of difference can affect the drawer’s movement. It also helps to install the drawers without the front panels first to test the runners with a bit of play. This way, you can better check if everything moves smoothly.
Additionally, I found that snapping the fronts into place with the concealed screws can sometimes be a bit tricky. Take your time here and start by tightening the screws loosely before fully securing them, as this allows you to slightly adjust the front panel.
If you notice that the drawer sticks, it can also help to remove it completely and check whether the runners are properly engaged and if any debris is blocking the slide.
If you like, I can also share details on how I aligned everything.

The drawer slides really need to be installed perfectly parallel, otherwise the drawer will quickly stick. This is a crucial point. I would like to add that marking the position of the rails on the inside of the dresser can be very helpful. This ensures that the drawer slides are mounted symmetrically and precisely. Personally, using clamps to hold the rails in place before screwing them in has also helped me a lot.

In addition, patience is key during installation, especially if you are working with these types of drawers for the first time.
I find assembling the Malm drawers to be quite a relaxed task if you take your time and don’t rush. 🙂
A little extra tip from me: don’t fully tighten the screws on the drawer fronts before all the drawers are hung. That way, you can make small adjustments at the end to ensure everything looks straight and even.
Oh, and a bit of lubricant on the drawer slides can work wonders if they feel a bit stiff – but please use only a silicone-based lubricant, not oil.
So overall: take it easy, and the Malm drawers will go together smoothly ;-)
