Hello everyone,

I would like to equip my Ikea PLATSA shelving units with casters to make the furniture more flexible to move around the room. Unfortunately, I can’t find any official casters specifically designed for PLATSA. My question is: How can I add casters to Ikea PLATSA shelves without losing stability or damaging the structure? Which casters are most suitable, how can they be securely attached, and are there any specific recommendations regarding load capacity or dimensions I should pay attention to?

Thank you in advance for your experiences and tips!

Hello Yasmin,

to safely equip an Ikea PLATSA shelving unit with casters, I recommend the following approach:

- Choose casters with a mounting plate that is at least 5x5 cm (2x2 inches) to distribute the load properly.
- Make sure the casters have a load capacity of at least 30 kg (66 lbs) per caster, especially if the shelf will be loaded.
- Before installation, remove the shelf’s feet. Then attach the casters to the designated points or, if there are no pre-drilled holes, in the corners of the base plate.
- Use sturdy screws (at least M4 or M5) and, if necessary, anchors or reinforcements to improve the screw connection.
- After installation, check the stability and ensure the casters roll smoothly.

This way the shelf can be moved without damaging the structure. It is important to always place it on a level surface.

The Ikea PLATSA frame is fairly sturdy, but avoid using uneven casters since that could cause creaking.

I would like to add that for modules like PLATSA, the load capacity of the casters is crucial, as the shelving unit must also withstand lateral forces.

Personally, I recommend casters with a locking feature, since furniture can easily be bumped and shift position. It is also important to choose casters with a soft tread (e.g., rubber) to protect the floor.

For those who prefer not to drill, there are so-called “roller feet for furniture” that can be attached using strong adhesive pads. However, this is not as stable as screwing them in.

Hello yasmin,

I completely understand that you want to make your PLATSA shelves mobile – that often makes daily life easier. Some time ago, I tried to attach casters to my PLATSA, but I was unsure about the stability.

So I started by fitting one shelf unit with casters in a less visible spot. I chose slightly flexible casters and fixed them with longer screws. It was important to me that the casters had brakes because I wanted to prevent the shelf from rolling away unintentionally.

At first, it felt a bit wobbly, but after tightening the screws, everything was stable. If you have the time, I would also recommend starting with a small unit on casters and testing it first.

However, I would also appreciate it if someone knows a more professional solution that puts less strain on the shelf!

I used casters with mounting plates, secured with strong screws. No holes from the manufacturer are necessary; simply attach them to the corners of the base panel. Important: casters with brakes for stability.

The same applies to PLATSA.

If you prefer not to make any drill holes: Attach casters to the feet using strong 3M double-sided tape. This is not a permanent solution but works as a temporary measure. Otherwise, use screws.
