Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble a few IKEA Billy bookcases, and for aesthetic reasons, I want to do this without the back panel. My main question is: Is it generally possible to assemble Billy bookcases without the back panel, and if so, what specific problems might occur? I am especially interested in whether the stability is significantly affected, for example, if the unit tends to tip over or if the individual components might warp more. If anyone has experience, I would like to know how this behaves with the larger models and whether there are any ways to compensate for it. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for the responses so far! One more question: Does anyone have experience with reinforcing side panels without a back panel, for example by adding extra cross braces or using thicker screws? Somehow, I need to compensate for the reduced rigidity. Are there practical solutions for this that can be implemented easily in furniture construction?

Somehow, I have to compensate for the negative impact on stiffness. That is the crucial point. Anyone who thinks this can be easily compensated without a back panel underestimates its structural importance. The back panel distributes loads and prevents the typical "wobbling." Cross braces or angle brackets are always compromises and often result in unstable constructions.
It is no coincidence that IKEA uses exactly these back panels – they are essential components, not design gimmicks.

Still, the challenge of turning a Billy bookshelf without a back panel into a stable piece of furniture is exciting and achievable 🙂 With a bit of passion and creativity, you can make it work! So don’t get discouraged, that’s the beauty of doing it yourself!! 🙂
