Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to equip my Ikea BESTÅ sideboard with casters to make it easier to move around the room. My specific question is: What is the best way to add casters to Ikea BESTÅ furniture modules, which types of casters are suitable (e.g., swivel casters, locking or non-locking), and are there any special factors to consider such as maximum load capacity or attachment options for the BESTÅ modules?

I have already checked that the cabinet normally comes with feet on the bottom, but I wonder if installing casters is straightforward or if additional measures are needed for better stability. I am also interested in whether there are well-fitting original Ikea casters or if it is better to use third-party options.

Your experiences or recommendations would be very helpful, especially regarding quality, stability, and appearance. Thanks in advance!

Hello Diar49,

First of all, a great topic that I can relate to well since I did the same with my BESTÅ shelves.

Here is a brief guide and some important tips:

- You should first know that the original feet of the BESTÅ system are designed with simple screw threads, which makes it easier to install casters if they also have screw threads.

- Suitable casters should have a maximum load capacity of at least 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per caster, preferably a bit more, especially if heavy inserts or devices are inside.

- Casters with brakes are recommended, especially if the furniture is in high-traffic areas or on smooth floors. This ensures it can be securely fixed in place.

- Pay attention to the correct thread size when choosing casters (usually M8, but some models have M6).

- If the casters do not have screw threads but only a mounting plate, you will need to get or create adapters or a subframe.

- Original Ikea casters for BESTÅ are rather rare, so most people use quality third-party casters (for example, threaded furniture casters or casters with mounting plates).

- Before installing the casters, I recommend adjusting the contact surface of the caster wheels properly to avoid wobbling.

- Optionally, you can attach a TRACECON or similar protective pad between the floor and the caster if you have sensitive flooring.

Summary: It’s best to screw on threaded casters (M8) with brakes and a load capacity over 10 kg (22 lbs) that fit the existing feet. If you can’t find original Ikea casters, buy high-quality ones from a hardware store or online.

If you want, I can send you installation pictures or links.

Good luck!

Exactly! I also screwed M8 threaded caster wheels onto my BESTÅ set – super easy, very flexible, and now I can move the furniture around my home effortlessly! ☺️

Important: Choose ones with locking brakes, otherwise it can easily slide on laminate flooring. Also, don’t pick wheels that are too small; 50 mm (2 inches) diameter works great and rolls very smoothly.

Don’t worry, it works better than you’d expect. You’ll be amazed at how much easier rearranging things becomes! 😊

I agree with that. It is essential to pay attention to the correct dimensions: M8 threading is almost standard on the feet of BESTÅ modules.

However, the load capacity of the casters is also important and should be rated at least for the total weight of the furniture – I recommend a minimum load capacity of 40–50 kg (88–110 lbs) if the sideboard is about 120 cm (47 inches) wide and fully loaded.

Additionally, the casters should have brakes if used on smooth floors like hardwood or tile. This provides safety against unwanted movement.

For installation, it is easiest to remove the original feet and screw in suitable casters with threaded stems instead.

I generally advise against casters with mounting plates, as these are often incompatible without additional modifications. Casters with threaded stems are typically the more stable and aesthetically cleaner solution.

Finally, regarding assembly: It is worth measuring the screw holes on the bottom panels of the BESTÅ carefully before purchasing and, if necessary, consulting the furniture’s assembly instructions to avoid any damage.

If you have questions about specific caster brands, I can recommend some durable models.
