Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble several Billy bookcases from IKEA soon and wonder which assembly tools are truly essential to carry out the installation as smoothly, quickly, and securely as possible. Since the bookcase is often considered quite simple, I don't want to bring too many tools but also don’t want to waste time because I’m missing something important.

Specifically, I’m interested in your experiences regarding:
- Which tools are absolutely necessary to have on hand (especially related to Billy bookcases, possibly depending on the different shelf depths or versions)?
- Are there small parts for which certain specialized tools (drill bits, screwdrivers, angles, etc.) are worthwhile?
- How do you handle the wall plugs and screws? Are there any tips or tools that make tightening for a snug and stable installation easier?

I would be very grateful for tips on tools, their use, and perhaps practical advice.

Best regards!

Hello Mupra46,

regarding your question: For Billy shelves, besides the supplied Allen key, in my experience a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque control and the correct drill bit for the wall plugs are essential. You should select the drill bit beforehand to match the wall plug – often the appropriate drill bits come in sets, otherwise you measure the diameter of the wall plug.

Here, I would specifically recommend a good Phillips screwdriver. Sometimes the screws don’t hold well in the cordless screwdriver bit, and you want to fine-tune the screws more precisely.

A small rubber mallet can help gently tap the wall plugs into the drill holes without damaging them. I also recommend using a spirit level for the final check of the shelf’s position.

Usually, not many more tools are needed for Billy shelves, as the system relies on simple assembly concepts. The important thing is careful preparation when drilling: precise positions and the right tools so that the shelf back panel is well fixed with dowels or screws.

Best regards!

Hello Mupra46,

I’d like to expand on your question a bit, as with Billy shelves it’s often underestimated how important the right tools and a careful approach are. Your question about essential tools hits the mark—I’d summarize it as follows:

1. Drill / Cordless screwdriver with a depth stop: Especially when mounting on the wall, you need the correct drilling depth for the anchors. Many people drill too deep or too shallow, which affects the holding strength.

2. Appropriate drill bit: The drill bit must be precisely matched to the anchor size. Standard sizes are usually 6 or 8 mm (0.24 or 0.31 inches) anchors. The size label on the anchor packaging, which many manufacturers note, helps with the selection.

3. Precision screwdriver with a PH2 cross-head: More important than often assumed, particularly when tightening screws without damaging the material. Applying too much force with a cordless screwdriver can strip the screw heads.

4. Bevel gauge or a combination of a carpenter’s square and a small spirit level: These help to align the shelf more accurately. No matter how simple Billy shelves appear, a crooked shelf looks unattractive over time and can even reduce the load capacity.

5. Rubber mallet: Already mentioned by narDietmar—important for inserting anchors and joints without damaging wood surfaces.

One more important tip for installation:
When mounting on the wall, it’s very helpful to use a stud finder before drilling to safely locate studs and avoid drilling into cables. I’ve had several clients who avoided additional drilling or damage thanks to this.

I fully agree with this. Especially if you want the shelf to stand firmly, correctly inserting the anchors is crucial.

How are you planning to handle the shelves themselves? Do you intend to fix them to the wall or install them as freestanding? This can affect the list of tools needed.

Best regards

To add:
Drills and screwdrivers in the appropriate sizes are essential. Don’t forget a cordless screwdriver with torque control.

You can use a rubber mallet to assist with the anchors. A spirit level is useful for alignment.

That’s basically it.
