Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for a variety of creative DIY ideas that work particularly well with Ikea Hemnes shelving units. It’s important to me that the suggestions are practical and can enhance the standard shelves either visually or functionally. I am interested in both simple modifications, such as painting or applying surface coverings, as well as more complex projects like adding extra components or adjustments that increase the shelves’ utility. Perhaps there are also tips on how to adapt the Hemnes series to different interior styles with just a few straightforward changes.

Who has experience with this and can recommend specific DIY projects, materials, or methods? I would also appreciate any advice on what to watch out for during the modification process to ensure the stability is maintained or even improved. Thanks in advance!

A simple DIY idea is to apply self-adhesive vinyl with a wood grain pattern or color, which quickly gives the Hemnes shelves a modern look. For a sturdier result, additional back panels can be installed, which improves durability and stability. Adding LED strips to the shelves also creates a pleasant atmosphere.

I can definitely confirm that. I was initially unsure if it would last long, but the result was great. I also used small, handmade wooden boxes to better organize the compartments and to avoid the typical “Ikea look.”

To be honest, at first I was worried that the modifications might reduce the stability, but adding metal brackets solved that issue. It’s really enjoyable to complete projects like this—especially when you see the finished result. Does anyone have tips on how to make the shelves more durable, especially if they need to be moved around frequently?

In general, it is important to regularly check the joints and screws of the Hemnes shelves and tighten them if necessary. For additional stability, metal brackets or angle irons can be discreetly attached on the inside. Additionally, wood glues designed specifically for wooden shelves are recommended, as they improve the connection alongside the screws.

For aesthetic improvements, the shelves can be treated with a wood stain to make them more resistant to moisture and scratches. When choosing extra items like crates or boxes, it’s important to ensure accurate dimensions to prevent unnecessary tilting or pressure.

Finally, it should be noted that when making modifications that affect load-bearing parts (such as installing extra openings or notches), extreme caution is necessary to avoid compromising the load capacity guarantee.
