ᐅ Do you have any tips for protecting Ikea BESTA furniture during a move and transportation?

suplo33Hello everyone,
I am planning a move soon and want to protect my Ikea Besta furniture as best as possible, especially during transport in the moving truck. The furniture consists of modular cabinets with mostly large surfaces and relatively delicate edges. Does anyone have experience or tips on the best way to pack them to avoid scratches, dents, or other transport damage?
I would also be interested to know whether it is worth fully disassembling the cabinets or better to transport them whole, and how to properly secure the individual parts. Thanks!

For surface protection, moving blankets or specialized furniture covers are suitable. These should be wrapped tightly around the individual parts and secured with stretch wrap. It is also important to protect the edges with foam or cardboard edge protectors. This helps absorb impacts during loading and unloading.
For securing the furniture in the vehicle, I have had good experiences using ratchet straps, which help prevent shifting during transport. When parts are disassembled, they should be bundled together—loose parts and screws must be kept in labeled bags to avoid losing anything during reassembly.

As narDietmar has already mentioned, disassembly is usually the most practical way to avoid damage—especially with BESTA units, since they typically use thin particle boards that are sensitive to pressure and impacts.
If you don’t want to take the cabinets completely apart, here are a few additional suggestions:
- Doors and drawers should definitely be removed and packed separately.
- Wrap all panels with blankets, bubble wrap, or packing paper to protect against scratches.
- Do not apply tape directly to the surface, as it can leave residues.
- If possible, avoid laying individual modules on their side, as this can affect stability.
As you’re already asking: yes, securing the load inside the vehicle is essential; ratchet straps and non-slip mats are very valuable here.
If you have any specific questions about disassembly, feel free to ask.

In addition to the previous tips:
- Screws and small parts should always be kept together in small, resealable bags. A smart tip is to attach these bags with adhesive tape to the back of their corresponding components.
- When using builder’s film or stretch film, make sure there is sufficient padding underneath to avoid pressure marks.
- For the corners of furniture, specially shaped foam edge protectors are suitable, as these are often overlooked during loading and unloading.
- If you do not want to disassemble individual modules, it is advisable to check accessibility and stability in advance to prevent any breakage during transport.
Transport damage is not only frustrating but also leads to avoidable extra costs.

Also, how should I pack the loose parts to ensure I can find everything easily during reassembly and nothing gets lost? Are there any proven methods to organize the individual components effectively?

I’m interested in which tools are absolutely necessary for disassembly? For disassembling the Ikea BESTA furniture, the following tools are recommended:
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2), as many screws are fastened with this
- Allen keys (often included, 4 mm or 5 mm), if available; otherwise, they can be purchased separately
- A small rubber mallet, if needed, to gently loosen parts without causing damage
For organizing screws and fittings, it’s best to use:
- Labeled small bags or boxes to associate them with the respective side panels
- Cardboard or sturdy boards to lay out and categorize the components
Clearly labeling the bags makes reassembly significantly easier. Additionally, taking a series of photos at each disassembly step is helpful to remember the order and attachment points.
