Hello everyone,

I have a question that might be familiar to many IKEA owners with the Malm nightstand: How can you make the drawers of the Malm nightstand quieter? The drawers don’t stick, but when opening and closing, there is definitely some noticeable squeaking or scraping, which can be especially disturbing at night. I suspect this is due to the suspension or the drawer slides, but I’m not sure how to fix it permanently and effectively without compromising the appearance or function. Does anyone know good tricks or proven solutions to make the drawers run more quietly? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hey! This topic is really interesting – I completely understand the problem! 🙂

What helped me a lot was simply applying a little silicone spray to the sliding rails. It makes the movement much smoother and much quieter. Important: Don’t use greasy oils or petroleum jelly, as they attract dust and cause noise later on!

Give it a try, it’s really great! And if you don’t have silicone spray, sometimes rubbing a little candle wax on the rails works really well too 🙂

Additional information: Common causes of noisy drawers in Malm furniture are often not damaged components but dry drawer slides or minor damage caused by dust and small particles. Silicone spray is proven effective as it reduces friction and does not attract dust. Alternatively, PTFE spray (Teflon spray) can be used, which works similarly.

A lesser-known tip is to check the screws on the drawer slides and slightly tighten them if necessary. Loosely fitted slides tend to cause rattling noises.

I would like to share my standardized method that works very well for noisy drawers:

1. Completely remove the drawer.
2. Thoroughly clean the drawer slides with a dry cloth to remove dust and lint.
3. Then, lightly spray with silicone spray or PTFE spray.
4. Slowly reinsert the drawer and open/close it several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
5. Check the screws and tighten them if necessary.

Important: Do not use heavy lubricants, as they tend to attract dirt.

This usually results in significantly quieter operation!

I believe the issue is partly psychological – when you close a loud drawer in the dark at night, it seems much more disturbing. Besides "technical" solutions, it can sometimes help to dampen the impact with small felt or foam strips at specific contact points. This prevents sudden, sharp noises.

Maybe you could check if the drawers hitting the frame are a factor? For me, that was actually crucial for the noise level.

Silicone spray on the sliding rails
That sounds pretty good, thanks! Could you tell me if silicone spray can be used indoors without any odor or harmful fumes? I spend a lot of time in the bedroom and want to be cautious.

Also: Is there a way to have the sliding rails pre-lubricated so you don’t have to apply it again? Because if the spray wears off over time, I’d end up with the same problem again.
