Hello everyone,

I recently bought some Malm furniture from Ikea, mainly dressers and nightstands. Since these pieces are made of particleboard with a laminate finish, I’m thinking about the best way to protect them from water damage. Specifically, I want to prevent water stains, moisture from spilled liquids, or condensation without affecting the appearance or functionality. Are there special sealants, care products, or effective protective measures you would recommend? Maybe you also have practical everyday tips based on your experience?

I look forward to your opinions and advice.

How important do you think the regular use of these maintenance products is?

That really depends on the product. Furniture wax or care products based on beeswax are usually very gentle and help support the surface without damaging it. When used frequently, they can even build up a protective film that repels mild moisture.

However, I recommend always checking the manufacturer’s instructions and testing on a small, inconspicuous area first.

If you place glass or mugs on the furniture, it’s also a good idea to use small waterproof mats. Small rubber or silicone pads under drinks are very practical.

One more tip: regularly ventilate the room and ensure good air circulation to prevent moisture buildup. Especially in bedrooms with occasional humidity, furniture can still be damaged despite appearing well maintained.

I would simply recommend focusing on keeping applications as dry as possible. Do not place wet glasses directly on the furniture – always use coasters and wipe up any liquids immediately.

Closed drawers protect against moisture inside, but avoid storing anything wet in there as well.

Important! For a personal touch, simply use nice felt coasters – they protect the furniture surface and look good.

One more tip: If something spills and you can’t clean it up right away, just gently wipe the area with a dry cloth and some furniture oil – this often helps to cover up small blemishes.

Stay relaxed and enjoy your Malm pieces! 😉
