Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in my apartment, but I am facing a problem that some of you might be familiar with: the floor in my room is not completely level, which makes assembling and aligning the cabinets challenging.

My specific question is: What practical methods, tools, or installation tips do you have to ensure a stable and level setup of Ikea Metod cabinets on uneven floors? I am interested in both mechanical solutions (such as shims, adjustable feet, or anchoring techniques) and practical advice from experience, for example on managing tolerances or adjustment options during assembly.

If you have dealt with similar situations or can recommend certain tools, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions and more detailed explanations on how to optimize the installation so that the cabinets stand flush and secure without wobbling or pressure marks.

Best regards and many thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello jakubus,

I completely understand how frustrating it can be when the floor isn’t level – I had the same issue in my own kitchen. What helped me the most was making good use of the height adjustability of the Ikea Metod cabinets. Essentially, the feet are designed to compensate for minor unevenness, but for larger differences, I had to use solid shims like thin wooden or plastic pieces to ensure stability.

It was especially important for me not to apply too much pressure when tightening the screws on the cabinets to avoid any warping. The assembly feels a bit awkward at first because you have to keep adjusting, but it’s definitely worth it.

I also think it’s a good idea to assemble and align the cabinets individually before fixing them together permanently. I know it takes more time, but it prevents annoying corrections later on.

Does anyone else have any special tips for shims or tricks to level cabinets?

Hello everyone,

Here is a brief guide on how I systematically level uneven floors when assembling Metod cabinets:

- Step 1: Measure the floor precisely and check for unevenness using a spirit level. Where is the floor uneven, and how large are the height differences?

- Step 2: Ikea Metod cabinets have adjustable feet, usually in the range of about 6 cm (2.4 inches). First, try to compensate for the differences using these.

- Step 3: If the unevenness is greater or concentrated in specific spots, use plastic shims or thin wooden strips. Carefully place these under the feet to correct the tilt.

- Step 4: If screws are necessary for wall mounting, be sure to use a mounting aid (drilling template, right-angle guides) to ensure the cabinets hang straight on the wall despite the uneven floor.

- Step 5: After installation, check the doors individually and adjust their alignment using the hinge adjustment options if needed.

It is important not to apply too much pressure on the cabinets, as this can warp the material. I always recommend setting up the cabinets roughly first, adjusting the heights, and then fastening them.

Many small manageable steps are better than too much eager effort at once. This way, you achieve clean results.

Regarding the topic "How can I optimize the installation of Ikea Metod cabinets on uneven floors?" I would like to go into more detail.

First, it is essential to carefully assess the overall situation on site. Floor unevenness can be caused, for example, by concrete irregularities or radiant floor heating elements. It is helpful to use not only a spirit level but also a long straightedge to precisely identify the floor profile.

Ikea Metod modules come with height-adjustable legs, usually mechanically adjustable via threads. This allows for a standard adjustment range of several centimeters (inches), but with very pronounced floor unevenness, these adjustments may not be sufficient. In such cases, technical aids can be used to achieve a proper alignment:

- Use of thin plastic or metal shims under the legs.
- Applying non-slip rubber material beneath the shims to prevent slipping.
- Installing a level base plate beforehand (e.g., plywood) on the floor if it is significantly uneven. The cabinets can then be built on top of this.

When making adjustments, it is very important to proceed step by step:

1. Balance all legs to level the modules.
2. Assemble the cabinets without fastening them together yet.
3. Check with a spirit level and, if available, a laser level.
4. Only now tighten the module connectors.
5. Fine-tune the door hinges.

Finally, the slope of the floor should not be underestimated, as mechanical stress on the cabinets can cause them to tilt if installed incorrectly.

How severe are your floor unevennesss exactly? And are you planning to install several cabinets side by side?

I find this question very reasonable. Just saying "unevenness" is often not enough, because the extent determines which solution is practical.

In my case, it was about 1 to 1.5 cm (0.4 to 0.6 inches), which I could easily compensate with the feet and shims. Otherwise, I would have also considered something like a baseboard.

Thank you for the detailed tips and questions, very helpful.

The unevenness varies between approximately 1.5 and 2.5 cm (0.6 and 1 inch) at different points. This is an older building that hasn’t had the floors leveled extensively. I want to install a full kitchen run with five cabinets of different heights and widths. Some cabinet fronts should align flush, so they need to be positioned quite precisely.

A base plate is basically an option, but I am concerned about the effort involved and the additional height it would add in the kitchen.

Which materials are best suited as an underlayment in this case (moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable, not too thick)? And how stable will the connection between the cabinets be when I position them with underlayments?
