Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes furniture piece and need to disassemble it because I’m moving. My specific question is: How does the disassembly of IKEA Brimnes furniture work, both technically and practically? Are there any special considerations for this model, such as particular tools or typical screw connections that are not immediately obvious?

I have the assembly instructions but no explicit disassembly guide. Of course, the steps should be done in reverse order, but some connections are unclear to me, especially how to best remove the back panel without damaging the furniture.

Additionally, I’m interested in common mistakes or pitfalls to avoid to ensure the furniture parts can be reassembled or transported easily afterward.

I would be very grateful for any detailed advice on this specific type of furniture!

Disassembling IKEA Brimnes furniture generally follows the same principles as assembly, but in reverse.

- Tools: Usually, a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with the appropriate bit is needed.
- Remove screws first, paying attention to fittings such as dowels and connectors.
- The back panel is often nailed or attached with thin screws, so carefully pry it off to avoid damaging the material.

A particular feature of Brimnes is the use of relatively thin particleboard and chipboard, so always work gently to avoid breaking the edges.

Avoid mistakes:
- Do not lift or pull too hard, as the snap-fit joints can break easily during transport.
- Collect and label screws systematically for later use.

A detailed step-by-step guide can be derived from the assembly instructions, but followed in reverse order.

Disassemble the furniture in the reverse order of how you assembled it. Loosen the screws and carefully separate the individual components. Use a thin putty knife or flat screwdriver to gently pry off the back panel.

For Brimnes furniture, standard tools are usually sufficient: a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with the appropriate bit.

The most common mistakes are rough handling and overlooking small screws, especially on the back panel. This panel is usually attached with thin nailed or screwed boards, which can break if removed improperly. So: do not use force and make sure to remove all screws before taking the panel off.

Also: label the parts during disassembly and store screws in separate, clearly marked containers. This will help avoid confusion during reassembly.

I can understand how stressful moving can be, especially when you have to disassemble furniture that isn’t designed for frequent dismantling. The Brimnes furniture looks sturdy but is actually somewhat sensitive to improper handling during disassembly.

It’s important to take your time and work carefully, especially with the back panel, as it is often made of thin material.

Sometimes you might feel uncertain about whether you could accidentally damage something—this is where reviewing the assembly instructions thoroughly and disassembling step by step can help.

And if you label the screws and small parts carefully, you will save yourself a lot of confusion later on. Best of luck with your move!

I can only confirm that. A systematic approach is half the battle.

Additionally, I recommend being very careful when removing the back panel, as it is often only loosely attached and may crack if pried too hard.

If possible, it is better to loosen the back panel gradually instead of taking it off all at once.

Furthermore, before dismantling, make sure the furniture parts are well lit so no screws or dowels are overlooked.
