Hello everyone,
I recently bought some IKEA Brimnes furniture (cabinets, dressers) and want to protect them as best as possible from direct sunlight. My issue is that the furniture has a dark finish, and I’ve noticed that exposure to sunlight near the windows causes them to fade quickly or damages the surface.
I’m interested in knowing which methods or materials you would recommend to effectively protect the Brimnes furniture from UV radiation without negatively affecting the appearance or functionality (e.g., drawers). For example, are special UV-protective window films useful, or are there suitable furniture care products that can protect the surface?
Additionally, I would be curious if anyone has experience with alternatives like specialized furniture covers, window blinds, or other measures that can slow down the aging process.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Hello everyone,
Here is my input on protecting Ikea Brimnes furniture from sunlight, based on an overview of the main protection methods:
- Darkening the sun: UV protective film is a good option if you want to keep natural daylight. It is easy to apply and relatively inexpensive.
- Shading: Interior blinds or curtains work well together with the films. They should be as light-blocking as possible to also reduce infrared radiation (heat).
- Furniture care: A special UV-protective wax or clear coat based on polyurethane can increase protection. It is important that the products are suitable for painted surfaces and do not cause discoloration.
- Regularly move or rotate furniture: This prevents the same areas from fading all the time.
- Furniture placement: If possible, position furniture further from the window or to the side.
A common mistake is relying only on furniture care without adequately protecting the window, which is not very effective in the long run.
Conclusion: A combination of structural measures (films and blinds) plus proper care is the best approach.

I understand your problem well, milan2, as I had a similar issue with my furniture. That hits the mark well – relying on a single measure is rarely enough. I would like to add that the choice of care product also plays an important role.
Manufacturer recommendations from IKEA and independent tests particularly suggest using products without aggressive ingredients and with UV-blocking properties for Brimnes.

Hello milan2,
I would like to add that there are also custom-made furniture covers available. These not only protect against light but also against dust and scratches. However, they can interfere with operating drawers if they are not easy to remove.
So, if permanent protection is desired, window films combined with blinds or shades are usually the more practical solution.
Additionally, it helps to shield the furniture with textiles or decorations during the strongest sunlight (usually midday to afternoon) if the window cannot be sufficiently protected.
I hope these tips are helpful.
