ᐅ Does the Kallax unit actually work well as a coat rack or entryway organizer?

Hello everyone,

I am considering using my IKEA Kallax shelf as a coat rack, but I have some concerns about its functionality. Does anyone here have experience with whether the Kallax is actually suitable as a coat rack?

I imagine using the compartments to store hats, scarves, and gloves, and maybe attaching hangers or hooks to the shelf to hang jackets. However, I wonder if it is stable enough and if the whole setup is practical without looking messy quickly or the shelf suffering under the weight.

What are your experiences, especially regarding load capacity and usefulness in an entryway? Does anyone have tips for optimizing it?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Regarding the attachment: The Kallax shelf is made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. Drill holes should preferably only be made in the load-bearing side panels to avoid compromising stability.

For hooks, screw-in hooks that can be screwed into the side panels are recommended. These usually hold well if installed correctly.

Alternatively, self-adhesive hooks are only somewhat advisable, since the rough surface of the melamine coating reduces adhesion, and the weight of a jacket can cause issues, especially with prolonged use.

IKEA also offers hanging organizers like the "SKUBB" that can be attached with Velcro straps to the Kallax compartments. These are suitable for storing smaller accessories in a space-saving way but do not replace jacket hooks.

My advice: For permanent use, screw in hooks; for lighter or temporary use, use hanging organizers as a supplement. Also, wall mounting of the shelf is absolutely necessary.

Exactly, I have a "Skubb" myself and find it perfect for scarves and gloves, especially when the compartments tend to get messy quickly. The hooks I have on my Kallax are just screwed-in cup hooks, and they hold really well.

If you’re already securing the shelf to the wall, you can also fix small wooden strips to the sides and screw the hooks into those. This way, you’re not putting any stress directly on the shelf itself but on the strips.

That holds up well and even looks nice if done neatly. An easy DIY with a bit of creativity 🙂
