Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question that some of you might be able to answer from personal experience:

Is it generally possible to replace the original doors of an IKEA Pax wardrobe system with doors from other sources?

I’m asking specifically because I want to create a custom look that goes beyond the standard options, but still keep the Pax frame. The doors should be sturdy and fit perfectly, ideally without major modifications to the carcass.

Are there any tips regarding feasibility, compatible dimensions, hardware fittings (hinges, attachment methods), or any potential limitations to be aware of?

I appreciate any experience, recommendations, or suggestions for alternative solutions.

Hey, very interesting question! 😊 I’ve actually tried this myself and can say: yes, you can replace the original Pax doors with others, but it requires some DIY skills and preparation.

Important points:
- The exact door measurements must match, otherwise you’ll end up with gaps or doors that don’t close properly.
- The fittings are usually special IKEA hinges. Other doors often have standard or different hinge systems. You’ll either need to create suitable adapters or replace the hinges completely.
- If you use standalone doors, I recommend strong hinges that can support the weight well.

Of course, it limits your design flexibility—you can, for example, install solid wood doors or doors with special finishes. But you lose the plug-and-play simplicity.

I thought it was really cool, though, because it lets you give your wardrobe a personal touch! Just don’t skimp on the materials 😉

That’s true, it can be done, but there are a few important points to consider, which I’d like to add:

- IKEA hinges are often cam hinges with a special press-fit system; other doors usually use standard cup hinges. So you should either buy compatible hinges or reposition the hinges.
- The doors need to be cut precisely, which requires accurate measurements of the cabinet body as well as the door height and width.
- The hinge mounting points on the Pax frame are fixed, so it makes sense to include or adapt these on the new door.

In conclusion: yes, it’s possible, but it won’t work easily without adjustments. If you have some DIY skills, you can create a highly customized wardrobe.

To supplement the previous posts, I would like to add some technical details and advice on whether and how IKEA Pax wardrobe doors can be replaced with others:

- The original attachment of the Pax doors is based on a special hinge with a hook-in system that is standardized only for the Pax frame. Doors from other manufacturers are generally not compatible without modifications.

- Alternative doors must have exactly the same drill holes or mounting points for the hinges, or the doors need to be modified to create these mounting points. This requires precise work.

- The hinge type can also be replaced with standard cup hinges or other types during retrofitting, but this changes the positioning on the cabinet body and thus affects the fit and closing mechanism.

- In terms of dimensions, it should be noted that IKEA usually uses a standard height division for Pax frames and doors, which is rarely exactly matched by other manufacturers.

- Alternatively, furniture fittings are available as accessories that allow custom doors to be adapted, but this is recommended only with solid carpentry skills.

- Additionally, it should be considered that warranty claims on the IKEA wardrobe system may become void when replacing doors.

Conclusion: Replacing doors is possible but technically demanding. A professional carpenter can help to precisely adapt and install custom doors.
