ᐅ Ikea Metod: How can I optimize the assembly of kitchen islands?

bakinHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and facing some challenges. Since different components are involved—cabinets, countertops, and anchoring—I want to optimize the assembly to ensure everything is stable, level, and practical.
Specifically, I am interested in:
- What is the most efficient sequence and approach for assembling a kitchen island?
- How can tolerances in floors or slightly uneven walls be best compensated for?
- Are there proven tips for securing the island without compromising seating or workspace comfort later on?
I have basic experience with furniture assembly, but given the complexity of kitchen islands, I would greatly appreciate practical experience or recommendations on useful tools and methods.
Looking forward to your advice and suggestions!

Hello bakin,
Your concern is very understandable. Installing a kitchen island with Ikea Metod can indeed be complex, especially because kitchen islands are often freestanding and require additional stability.
Here are a few basics that are often overlooked:
- Always start by checking the floor depth and level. If the floor is uneven, it is best to use adjustable cabinet feet, which Ikea offers for Metod.
- First, assemble all base cabinets individually and position them where the island will be located. Use a spirit level and adjust as needed.
- Then screw the individual modules together before placing the countertop on top.
- For securing the countertop and the island to the floor or wall, special brackets and fixing materials are commonly used, which Ikea either provides or you can obtain separately.
- Shims or thin pieces of wood can also help with leveling unevenness during adjustment.
If you are familiar with the basics, my advice is to always check step by step that everything is level and stable before moving on to the next step.
If you like, I can also send you a brief guide outlining the most important work steps.

Wow, amazing! Kitchen islands are a big deal! For me, it really helped to create a stable base. So make sure to properly adjust the feet, otherwise everything will wobble! 😃
Also: take your time for fine-tuning! Better spend an extra hour, so the island stands rock-solid and you can easily work or sit at it.

I would like to follow up briefly: So far, I mostly read about floor inspection and adjusting the legs, but what about the connection to the wall or the rest of the kitchen? In my experience with Ikea Metod, especially for kitchen islands, the side attachment is often underestimated. Stabilizing only with legs is not always sufficient, particularly with thin countertops. It’s important to carefully consider if and how the island can be secured without losing flexibility.
Also, I would note that there are definitely differences depending on the type of subfloor—such as tile versus hardwood flooring—so different mounting materials should be used accordingly.

Unfortunately, my kitchen island doesn’t have a wall directly behind it since it stands freely in the room. So the connection to the wall is not possible, and I’m wondering what kind of fixings or reinforcements make sense to prevent the island from tipping or wobbling under sideways pressure.
Are there any special reinforcements or construction tips that can be used in addition to the standard Metod system? I’ve also considered reinforcing the kitchen island with some kind of metal profile underneath to increase stability. Do you have any experience with this?
Additionally, I find the assembly sequence for a freestanding island quite different compared to a kitchen run against a wall and would like to discuss that in more detail.
