Hello everyone, I recently assembled a PLATSA shelving unit from Ikea and have noticed that the shelves tend to sag over time, especially under heavier loads like books and other items. I would like to know how to effectively prevent the shelves from sagging. Are there any tips for proper installation, additional reinforcements, or alternatives you would recommend? I am particularly interested in solutions that can be implemented using the original Ikea materials or that require minimal effort. Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

I would like to know how to effectively prevent the sagging of the PLATSA shelves. Hey! I know that feeling all too well! 😊 The best way is to use additional metal brackets underneath the shelves to better distribute the load. Even better: get some thin plywood sheets and screw them underneath the shelves. This will greatly increase their stability!
Also, make sure the shelves are not too long without support in the middle, or they will bend quickly. Small tricks, big effect! Good luck!

Use additional metal brackets under the shelves to better distribute the load! Metal brackets are helpful, but intermediate supports or a center post also prevent sagging. Important: distribute the weight evenly.
To prevent sagging of Ikea PLATSA shelves, I recommend the following measures:
- Assembly according to instructions: Ensure that all fasteners are properly and securely installed.
- Load distribution: Distribute the load on the shelves as evenly as possible, avoiding point loads.
- Additional supports: Install metal brackets or wooden strips under the shelves for reinforcement.
- Self-reinforcing panels: Replace or reinforce the shelves with plywood or multiplex boards.
The original PLATSA shelves are veneered particle boards that naturally sag with large spans or heavy loads. Using reinforcement elements is therefore advisable and extends the lifespan.

The original shelves from PLATSA are veneered particleboard, which naturally tend to sag under long spans or heavy loads. This is the key point. PLATSA shelves are thin and made of particleboard, which limits their load-bearing capacity. My advice: if you plan to load the shelves over about 80–100 cm (31–39 inches) or more, you should definitely include a support in the middle.
Specifically, you can proceed as follows:
- Check the depth of your shelving unit: the deeper it is, the more it will sag.
- Build a center support from wooden battens and screw it underneath the shelf. I recommend battens at least 20 x 40 mm (0.8 x 1.6 inches).
- Make sure the battens are flush and firmly fixed to prevent twisting forces.
- Alternatively, you can reinforce the shelf supports themselves by gluing multiplex plywood underneath, which roughly doubles the rigidity.
How much load and shelf width do you have exactly? Then we can provide more precise advice.

I would add: The PLATSA carcasses are not designed for heavy loads. Ideally, use a combination of center supports and metal profiles under the bottom panel. This significantly improves load-bearing capacity.
Additionally, I recommend not placing heavy items like file folders on just one side of the shelf but distributing the weight evenly. Long-term loads concentrated in one spot promote sagging.
If in doubt, it is worth replacing potential reinforcements from Ikea with plywood shelves, as these have better structural stability than the standard chipboard panels.
