Hello everyone,
I am currently considering how to customize the IKEA Hemnes series to make it more unique without much effort and without changing the structure. Who among you has your own DIY ideas or proven methods to enhance Hemnes furniture visually or functionally? I am especially interested in practical solutions that are low-cost and could also solve everyday issues, such as additional storage space, visual upgrades, or integrating technology. I look forward to your creative and functional suggestions!

It is important to observe the static load limits to avoid compromising stability. You nailed it. I once tried to attach a heavy glass top to a Hemnes dresser – unfortunately, the screws weren’t designed to hold that weight, and I had to remove everything again. Better to check in advance, otherwise you’ll run into trouble.
As a supplement: Those familiar with woodworking should work with MDF boards for the Hemnes cabinets to create built-ins or coverings. MDF is easy to paint and helps reduce vibrations when integrating technical equipment. Another option is embedding LED modules into the side panels if you want to utilize some of the vertical surfaces.

I covered the cabinet doors with mirror film – it’s easy to do and visually makes the space look much larger. That sounds great. How exactly did you apply the film? I’m wondering if it could also be done on the drawers.

How exactly did you install the film?I removed the doors first, then applied the film damp on the back with water and a little dish soap, smoothing out air bubbles with a squeegee. Pay close attention to the exact measurements, as that is important. This method works just as well for drawers.

Who here has their own DIY ideas or proven methods to enhance Hemnes furniture either visually or functionally? Here’s my “secret tip”: Use flyers, catalogs, or pretty gift wrapping paper to line the inside of drawers or shelves – it gives the furniture a personal touch and adds small highlights to everyday use. Plus, it’s fun to customize your storage space. 👌
