Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question that I’m sure some of you have encountered: How can I stop the doors of the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe from squeaking?

I have the wardrobe set up at home and have noticed that some of the doors make quite a squeaking noise when opened and closed, which has become more noticeable over time. The squeaking occurs especially after the doors have been used for a while and is audible despite correct installation and alignment.

I’m interested in suitable care products, lubricants, or adjustments that effectively reduce the squeaking without damaging the material, as I definitely don’t want to harm the wardrobe. I’ve already checked the standard assembly instructions, but this issue is not really addressed there.

Additionally, I would like to know if there are more long-lasting solutions, such as replacing the hinges or other parts that might directly address the cause. Are there specific recommendations for the type of material used for the hinges on BRIMNES, or is squeaking a common issue with this model that is generally harder to fix?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello, usually it helps to lubricate the hinges with some silicone spray or graphite powder.

Otherwise, you should check if the hinge screws are tight.

Just slightly loosen the hinge, apply some lubricant, then tighten it again.

Hello Bumomin,

I can understand your issue well, as the typical creaking noise with BRIMNES doors can actually have several causes. First, it is helpful to identify the exact source of the noise: is it the hinge itself creaking or the door in a specific position, perhaps along the edge?

A common cause is friction in the metal hinges, which as reni45 already mentioned, can be effectively treated with an appropriate lubricant. I specifically recommend corrosion-resistant silicone spray because it penetrates well into all moving parts and does not attract dust – this is important for a lasting effect.

Furthermore, you should check whether all the hinge screws are properly tightened. Sometimes slightly loose screws cause unnecessary movement that, combined with dry metal, leads to creaking. It may also help to slightly adjust the hinges – that is, make minor alignment corrections – to minimize friction.

If the problem persists despite lubrication and adjustment, it might be advisable to replace the hinges. Hinges with quality features such as ball bearings or special damping technology are better suited because they operate more quietly.

You should also avoid using WD-40 or similar products, as these oils often attract dust and can worsen the effect. In summary: maintain the hinges regularly and keep them clean to prevent creaking from occurring in the first place.

I hope this helps you with your BRIMNES wardrobe!

That may be true, but honestly, creaking in IKEA furniture is sometimes just planned obsolescence. Cheap materials and simple hinges naturally mean you won’t enjoy them forever.

That often only provides a short-term fix. A more permanent solution would be to replace the hinges with higher-quality ones, even if that involves more effort and cost.

Also: Why specifically check screws on BRIMNES doors? That’s the case with almost any piece of furniture. In my opinion, the creaking usually results from poor workmanship and the compression of low-quality materials.

My advice: If it’s worth it to you, replace the hinges, but don’t ignore that the root cause lies in the materials used. All lubricants and adjustments only help for a limited time.
