Hello everyone, I am planning to customize the color of an Ikea Pax wardrobe because the standard white is a bit too plain for me, and I would like to create something more personal. I am interested in what options are available to alter the surfaces of the doors or carcasses without compromising the material quality or making the wardrobe unusable. This includes painting, applying adhesive films, or other techniques. It is also important for me to know whether this can be done by myself without special workshop equipment and which materials are truly suitable. Does anyone have experience with custom color modifications on Pax wardrobe components, especially with lacquered or foil-coated surfaces? What about adhesion, durability, and appearance? I would appreciate specific tips, product recommendations, or methods. Thanks in advance!

Basically, you can use Plexiglas film or furniture foil for the doors; this is fairly simple and protects the surface. Alternatively, special paint for MDF is suitable, but make sure to sand thoroughly and apply a primer beforehand.

For color customization of Ikea Pax cabinets, I recommend the following approach: First, all surfaces should be cleaned and degreased to ensure optimal adhesion. The doors of the Pax series usually consist of coated MDF or particleboard with a foil or paint finish. For foil-covered surfaces, sanding before painting is essential to roughen the surface. Acrylic paints or water-based furniture lacquers are suitable for coloring, as they are easy to apply and lightfast. For long-lasting results, applying a primer is advisable. Alternatively, furniture films offer a quick and reversible solution that can be applied to doors without much effort.

I would like to share a short tutorial on how I customized the color of my Pax wardrobe:

- Step 1: Remove the doors and thoroughly degrease them using a suitable cleaner.
- Step 2: Lightly sand the laminated surfaces with fine sandpaper (grit 220), taking care not to sand through the finish.
- Step 3: Remove the dust, then apply a primer suitable for plastics.
- Step 4: After drying, apply the desired furniture paint, for example, acrylic- or water-based, in several thin coats.
- Step 5: Lightly sand between coats with fine sandpaper.
- Step 6: Protect the surface with a clear lacquer finish (optional).

Many make the mistake of not sanding the surface and later complain that the paint is peeling off. Patience during drying pays off. For cabinets used infrequently, adhesive furniture film is also sufficient, as it can be easily applied and removed if needed.

I hope this is helpful.

Just a quick note: I don’t recommend using regular spray paint because the films and coatings underneath often don’t adhere well. It’s better to use a furniture-grade varnish or paint. It lasts longer and looks better.

For laminated surfaces, sanding before painting is absolutely necessary to roughen the surface.

This is an important point. Additionally, it is best to paint the doors in a well-ventilated area and use protective measures, as some primers and paints contain VOCs. It is also advisable to perform a test run in an inconspicuous spot beforehand to check the material compatibility. If you don’t have painting accessories, spray cans can be used as an alternative, but make sure to choose products specifically designed for furniture and plastics.
