Hello everyone, I noticed with my Billy shelf that some of the screws included in the delivery are a bit too short compared to the intended drill holes and connectors. This causes them not to hold securely or properly, which affects the stability.
My question to you is: Why are some screws in the BILLY apparently too short? Is this due to production variations, different batches, a design choice, or are there perhaps hidden details in the assembly process that need to be considered to fix this apparent issue?
I am especially referring to the small screws for the shelves or connectors, which do not penetrate deeply enough into the material, making the shelf a bit wobbly in my case.
I look forward to your opinions, experiences, or explanations, and any tips on what to watch out for.

Why are some screws apparently too short for BILLY?Good question. I think it’s important to consider whether the issue really lies with the screw length or if it might be related to the assembly instructions or the materials used. It could be that the screws are intentionally made slightly shorter to avoid damaging the wood.
Another perspective is that different production batches can sometimes have minor variations in screw length. But before assuming this is a defect, it would be helpful to know if the assembly was followed exactly as per the instructions and whether original screws or replacement parts were used.
In general, it would also be necessary to check the exact material: chipboard can slightly swell or compress during assembly, which affects how the screws hold.
From my experience, the issue with screws being too short in BILLY shelves often results from material and manufacturing tolerances.
I consider this a key point: The manufacturer has to balance sufficient durability with protecting the wood from cracks or splits. Therefore, the screws in BILLY shelves are designed to fit tightly without damaging the chipboard material when screwed in.
Another relevant factor is the assembly instructions: if they are not followed precisely, for example if screws are not inserted straight, it can cause the screws to appear too short because they don’t fully engage. It’s also advisable to reinforce the shelf with longer screws or special connectors when subject to heavier loads.

Replace with longer screws, which you can buy at a hardware store. That’s certainly a practical suggestion, thank you. However, I would like to understand whether this is a common production issue with BILLY or if it possibly affects only certain packages or batches.

The manufacturer has to strike a balance between sufficient durability and protecting the wood from cracking or splitting. That sounds plausible. Does anyone know if IKEA has made any official statements about this?
I’m also curious whether the shorter screws are actually designed to be used with dowels and therefore don’t need to be screwed in as deeply – in some shelves, I get the impression that the screw is seated inside the connector rather than the wood.
IKEA often uses so-called Minifix screws in BILLY furniture, which are short but, when combined with dowels and connectors, provide good stability.
The screws alone are rarely long because the strength comes from the interaction with the connectors, not just from penetrating the wood.
Therefore, if the screws seem too short, you should check whether all the connecting elements are properly installed.
