Hello everyone, I am planning to mount my Ikea Besta shelving unit on a solid wall and feel a bit uncertain about the right choice of anchors and screws. Specifically, I would like to know which anchors are best suited to securely and permanently fix the BESTA, especially on a concrete or brick wall. What screw length and thickness are ideal to ensure the shelf remains stable under load without the risk of falling or causing damage to the wall? Additionally, I am interested in whether different wall materials (e.g., aerated concrete, solid brick) require special types of anchors or if standard anchors would be sufficient for this application. I look forward to specific recommendations and, if possible, an explanation of the choices. Thanks in advance!

In general, I recommend using suitable universal wall plugs with a diameter of 8 mm (0.3 inches) for mounting Ikea BESTA shelves, as they provide good load capacity. For concrete or solid brick walls, cavity anchors or nylon expansion anchors are the best choice because they securely anchor in the drill hole. The screws should ideally be M6 with a length of 60 to 80 mm (2.4 to 3.1 inches), depending on the plug length and wall thickness.

For aerated concrete, special hollow wall or aerated concrete anchors designed for softer materials are suitable. Standard plugs may fail or damage the material in this case. It is also important that the anchors engage at least 50 mm (2 inches) into the wall material to ensure a permanently secure installation.

To answer the question in more detail, when assembling an Ikea BESTA shelving unit, you should pay special attention to the following points:

- Accurately identify the wall type (concrete, brick, aerated concrete, drywall, etc.)
- Choose anchors suitable for the wall type (e.g., metal expansion anchors for concrete, special aerated concrete anchors for aerated concrete)
- Match the drill bit diameter to the anchor size, usually an 8 mm drill bit (5/16 inch) for 8 mm anchors
- Select screw length so that at least 40-50 mm (1.5-2 inches) engage in the anchor, plus the thickness of the shelf bracket
- Use screws made of galvanized steel or stainless steel for high corrosion resistance

A common pitfall is using anchors that are either too small or not suitable for the wall material. For example, ordinary plastic anchors tend to cause wall damage and do not hold properly in aerated concrete. In this case, special cavity anchors like the Fischer UX or Fischer Cavity are recommended.

Also, be careful not to overtighten screws to avoid damaging the anchors. It is advisable to tighten screws with a torque wrench or carefully by hand.

Totally interesting question! I recently mounted a BESTA on concrete walls myself and can say from experience: invest in good anchors! I used 8mm (5/16 inch) nylon expansion anchors with M6 screws that were 70mm (2 3/4 inches) long. This holds very securely, even when heavier items are placed on the shelf.

Also, make sure to insert the anchors deep enough into the hole and blow out the hole thoroughly; otherwise, you won’t get the full load capacity.

Don’t worry, it works great once you have the right components. I even recommended it to my neighbor, who is completely satisfied!

Hello! I think it’s great that you are approaching this topic so thoroughly, because choosing the right anchors and screws is essential for stability and safety.

A tip for everyone: If you have a brick wall, make sure the wall is well dried before installation and test with a drill bit to check if it goes through the wall smoothly. For bricks, a plastic or nylon expansion anchor with an 8 mm (5 inches) diameter is suitable, paired with a galvanized M6 x 70 mm (2 3/4 inches) screw.

If the wall is made of concrete, metal expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors are more appropriate, as they can handle higher loads. Depending on the weight of the shelf and expected use, it’s better to be conservative when sizing.

Finally, double-check the screw length briefly— not every screw fits every anchor.

Hey, I really like that so much attention is given to choosing the right anchors here! 😄 A quick practical tip from me: If you’re hanging the shelf on a wall made of aerated concrete, it’s best to use anchors specifically designed for aerated concrete. They’re like little superheroes inside the wall 🦸🏼‍♂️ – hold strongly and prevent cracks. For the screws, size 6 with a length of at least 60–70 mm (2.4–2.8 inches) is ideal to ensure enough grip in the anchor without damaging the wall.

The BESTA is already quite a handsome piece and, of course, wants to stand firmly on the wall – just like a superhero. Good luck and have fun screwing it in! 😉
