Hello everyone, I’m planning to modify my IKEA BESTÅ units to create a practical craft station with ample storage space. I imagine a solution that is flexible enough to neatly store various craft supplies like paper, paints, tools, and small machines, while also providing a stable work surface. It is important to me that storage and workspace are combined as effectively as possible, without having to constantly dismantle everything. Does anyone have experience with adapting BESTÅ modules to meet these requirements? I would appreciate any tips, suggestions for suitable accessories, or clever custom designs!

Juliane491 Mar 2016 07:44Thanks in advance for all the advice! I’m especially interested in the idea of using an epoxy resin coating on the work surface, as it sounds durable and easy to maintain. Has anyone had experience with how practical an epoxy resin surface is for cutting with craft knives? I want to use the board as a cutting mat as well, but without damaging the surface too quickly.
Also, I’m considering whether it makes sense to custom-make drawer inserts or if ready-made inserts for BESTÅ units would be better for organizing craft supplies. Maybe someone can recommend where to find suitable storage boxes or insert trays that fit well inside these drawers?

Over time, the surface can become damaged or develop small marks that, while not deep, can be visually unappealing.
If cutting is going to be a regular task, I recommend using a self-adhesive cutting mat that can be easily replaced as needed. You can attach this mat to the epoxy resin board without causing permanent damage to the surface.

- The BESTÅ shelves work great with plastic boxes that can be removed individually. This way, you can easily take something to another place.
- IKEA’s drawer systems themselves are excellent because they fit perfectly and are easy to assemble.
- In my experience, fabric or plastic baskets that you use inside are also practical for irregularly shaped or larger items.
- By the way, I equipped my craft table so that, despite all the storage, enough light falls onto the work surface from above – this is something to keep in mind when designing as well.

Especially when crafting, you don’t want to work in the shadows. Lamps with adjustable arms or even LED strips under shelves are really invaluable.
Another idea: Practical hook rails on the sides of the BESTÅ can keep small tools like scissors or cutting lines within easy reach. This keeps the work surface clear while still having everything at hand!
The crafting paradise is unstoppable! Keep it up, Juliane49!
How about adding small panel elements to the BESTÅ? For example, you can attach pinboards or whiteboards to the sides or above the countertop. This way, you can keep notes, inspirations, or papers handy – practical and visually appealing.
You can also use magnetic strips to keep small metal parts or tools within easy reach.
And hey, this transforms a simple cabinet setup into a real creative station that’s even fun to use!
