Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several Billy bookcases from Ikea and want to ensure they are protected against moisture in the long term. The shelves are placed in a room that can occasionally become damp, especially in winter due to increased humidity. My specific questions are:

1. Which materials or coatings are recommended to effectively protect the shelves from moisture without significantly altering their appearance?

2. Are there any tried-and-true home remedies or special products suitable for protecting particleboard furniture?

3. Should I treat the shelves from the outside as well for additional protection, or is treating the inner sides and visible surfaces sufficient?

I would appreciate practical advice and experiences so I can take targeted action and keep the shelves durable for a long time. Thank you!

Hello,

to protect Billy shelves from moisture, I recommend applying a targeted sealant with clear varnish or water-based lacquer. These products create a waterproof layer that prevents moisture from penetrating the particleboard.

All visible surfaces should be treated, including the inside panels, as moisture can enter from all sides. This is especially important for the edges, which are particularly vulnerable.

Alternatively, thin protective films or specialized furniture sealants can be used, although these are usually more expensive. Home remedies like oils or waxes offer only limited protection and can alter the surface appearance.

Regular monitoring of indoor humidity is also important.

In addition to Fareo65: Treatment with water-based acrylic or polyurethane varnishes is very effective and remains transparent. It is important to carefully sand the surface before applying the varnish to ensure good adhesion.

For rooms with especially high humidity, it is also possible to place moisture absorbers in the room to improve the indoor climate.

Otherwise, make sure that shelves are not placed directly against exterior walls to prevent condensation.

Paint, sand properly, and seal all edges. Avoid oil- or wax-based products, as they often darken over time and attract dust. Additionally, monitor the indoor humidity with a hygrometer.

Wow, the most important thing is definitely proper storage! 🙂 I once kept my Billy shelves in a partially finished basement, and that didn’t end well! So if you plan to place the shelves in a more humid environment, make sure to keep them away from the wall to allow air circulation! And use some moisture absorbers too – that really helps keep the shelves in good shape for a long time! 🙂

I agree with that. It is essential not to place shelves directly against exterior walls or cold surfaces, as condensation often occurs there. Additionally, I recommend sealing the chipboard with a water-repellent varnish to protect it. It is important not to neglect edges and back panels, as moisture can easily penetrate these areas.

Also, plan for regular ventilation intervals to keep humidity levels low.
