Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the IKEA Brimnes furniture series and am now looking for reliable care instructions to keep the furniture in good condition for as long as possible.
I am particularly interested in which specific cleaning techniques or products are suitable for the surfaces and whether there are any mistakes to avoid during maintenance that could damage the material or finish.
Are there also any tips on how to prevent scratches or typical signs of wear?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations that go beyond the basic advice provided in the IKEA care guide.

As a general rule, it is recommended to clean most surfaces of BRIMNES furniture with a slightly damp, soft cloth.

You should avoid chemical cleaners or abrasive agents, as they often damage or dull the surface. Lukewarm water, optionally with a small amount of mild dish soap, is ideal for tougher dirt.

Regarding scratches: It is advisable to use coasters and avoid placing sharp or heavy objects directly on the surfaces. If minor damage does occur, special repair kits designed for laminate and veneer surfaces can often be used to conceal small defects.

- Do not use abrasive or harsh cleaning products
- Avoid scratches by using protective pads

I would like to clarify the care instructions a bit more, especially for the surface of BRIMNES, which is usually a melamine-coated particleboard with a lacquered edge.

- Microfiber cloths are best for cleaning, as they do not leave lint or cause micro-scratches.
- If you use a mild cleaning agent, it should not contain solvents or alkaline substances, as these can damage the melamine surface over time.
- The surface is water-resistant, but standing water can still cause the edges to swell if left for a long time, so wipe off water droplets immediately.
- For scratches, repair kits for melamine surfaces from hardware stores are useful; these often include wax sticks to fill small scratches and match the color.
- Avoid strong temperature fluctuations, as these can weaken the bonding between the boards and the edge.

Which type of furniture from the BRIMNES series do you have exactly? That could help narrow down the recommendations.

I mainly have the 3-door wardrobe model and two bedside tables. Both have the white finish with matte edges.
The wardrobe is in a room with windows facing southwest, so it gets some afternoon sun, which might be a factor for the finish.
I am interested in whether direct sunlight affects the color at all and, if so, how significant the change might be.

Regarding the UV resistance of the BRIMNES surface:

The melamine-coated surfaces are generally quite resistant to discoloration caused by sunlight; however, intense and prolonged direct exposure to sunlight can cause color changes, especially on white or light-colored surfaces.

Therefore, it is advisable not to place the furniture permanently in direct sunlight or at least protect it with semi-transparent curtains.

In addition, intense sunlight combined with heat can affect the plastic edging, potentially causing slight warping or detachment, especially if humidity levels fluctuate.
