Hello everyone, I would like to start a focused discussion on the topic: "How to protect BILLY shelves from pet damage?" Specifically, I am interested in how to best protect the popular IKEA BILLY shelves from scratches, bites, and other damage caused by pets such as cats or dogs, without losing the shelves’ charm and functionality. Perhaps you have experience with protective measures, special films, barriers, or alternative solutions? Tips for preventing pets’ interest in the shelves would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your constructive contributions!

The shelf is covered with clear plastic film to protect it from scratches. Cats usually check if they can scratch the film. Otherwise, lightly spraying with citrus oil can help, as cats strongly dislike the smell.

I completely understand how frustrating it is when your pet’s favorite items get damaged. For me, a combination of providing a distraction (a scratching post nearby) and lightly shielding the area with plexiglass worked.

I can confirm that, but use it carefully, as some animals may react sensitively.

Cover the shelves with foam rubber or felt. This also helps to reduce noise when the cat jumps off.

Don’t forget to take care of your pets’ claw maintenance.

I have applied rough adhesive tapes on the underside of BILLY shelves myself. This keeps the cats away because they don’t like the texture.

Magnetic child safety locks on cabinet doors. This makes it more difficult for curious pets to access books or other items, resulting in fewer damages.
