Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Platsa shelving unit with doors and I’m not satisfied with how loudly the doors close. I find the noise when shutting disturbing, especially during quiet times. Has anyone had experience with how to make the PLATSA doors close more quietly and softly? I would like to learn about possible technical modifications or alternative installation solutions to reduce the noise or improve the door closure itself. I’m also interested in general tips for noise reduction with these doors. Thanks in advance!
Hey Sagekin! 😄 I know how that feels – loud slamming doors can be really annoying, especially in the middle of the night. What I sometimes do is attach foam or felt strips on the inside of the door frame to prevent the door from hitting the wood directly. They’re affordable, easy to stick on, and do a great job of dampening the noise. Plus, it almost gives a more luxurious feeling when the door gently “plops” instead of slamming!
I think it is important to also analyze the mechanical locking mechanism. The PLATSA doors do not use an integrated soft-close mechanism, right? If not, the question would be whether it is possible to install some kind of soft-close adapter or if that might even be technically feasible without damaging the construction. Simply attaching damping strips might provide a short-term solution, but perhaps that is only a makeshift fix that does not truly address the root cause of the loud closing.

It might be worth considering whether to modify the existing hinge to allow for a dampened closing action. However, this could affect stability and durability. Does anyone here already use retrofit soft-close hinges with PLATSA?
To optimize the door closing mechanism on Ikea PLATSA, I can recommend the following practical measures:
- Replace the existing door hinges with soft-close hinges of compatible dimensions.
- If replacement is not possible, applying self-adhesive plastic or rubber bumpers at the contact points is advisable.
- Check the precise alignment of the doors, as misalignment often causes slamming.
- Install a damping mechanism on the door frame, as is optionally possible with some furniture.
These steps help reduce mechanical stress and noise levels. It is important that all components are specifically compatible with PLATSA.
