Hello everyone, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am considering painting the doors with chalk paint to give them a more rustic look. My question is: Can this be done easily using chalk paint? Do I need to sand or prime the doors beforehand, or is a smooth surface sufficient for the paint to adhere well? I’m also interested in how durable chalk paint is on the KALLAX doors, especially regarding scratches or moisture. Has anyone had experience with this? I want to make sure the result not only looks good but also stays practical for everyday use.

My question is: Is it even possible to use chalk paint without much effort? Do I need to sand and prime the doors beforehand, or is a smooth surface enough for the paint to adhere well?Hello nurano, generally speaking, chalk paint can be applied to smooth surfaces like the doors from KALLAX, but it’s not always ideal without some preparation. I recommend the following steps:
1. Cleaning: First, thoroughly clean the doors with a mild detergent to remove dust and grease.
2. Light sanding: Even if the surface is smooth, it’s advisable to lightly sand it – using fine sandpaper (grit 220) will improve adhesion.
3. Priming: Priming is not absolutely necessary, but for smooth melamine or plastic surfaces, a bonding primer significantly helps prevent the chalk paint from peeling.
4. Applying chalk paint: Apply several thin layers (2-3), since thick layers can peel quickly.
5. Sealing: Finally, seal the surface with a clear furniture wax or clear coat if the doors will be subject to heavier use.

how durable chalk paint is on the KALLAX doors, especially regarding scratches or moisture.Chalk paint itself tends to be matte, porous, and more delicate compared to acrylic or latex paints. Sealing is the key to making the surface more scratch-resistant and moisture-repellent. A good sealant provides lasting protection, which, depending on the product, can even be water-repellent.
So: yes, it works – but with proper preparation and sealing, you’ll enjoy your project much longer. I’m happy to help with any further questions.
I would like to add that with IKEA KALLAX doors, the type of surface finish on the doors is also important. They are usually made of coated particleboard with a melamine or laminate layer, which is very smooth and partly quite abrasion-resistant. This makes it difficult for chalk paint to adhere permanently without proper surface preparation.
In my experience, this is exactly the key. For a similar project, I used special bonding primers first. Then I applied chalk paint followed by two thin layers of wax for protection. The doors were easy to clean, and the paint adhered without chipping for several months.
I would also avoid applying regular chalk paint directly without sealing. It is not designed for heavy use on frequently handled furniture parts. If you want a matte finish, you can use wax wax; for more protection, even a matte polyurethane clear coat.
Just painting without preparation usually does not work well in the long term.

I want to make sure the result not only looks good but also stays practical for everyday use.I totally understand that! I once took on the project of painting my KALLAX doors with chalk paint because I simply love the matte, slightly nostalgic charm. 🙂
Of course, chalk paint is perfect for that look, but it’s not the most durable paint for daily use. For the KALLAX doors, I first lightly sanded the surface with very fine sandpaper, which really helps—don’t worry, not too much!
Then I used a special primer because the doors are really smooth, and I didn’t want the paint to just peel off.
Here’s a helpful tip: apply two to three very thin coats of chalk paint with a good flat brush. Patience pays off! After that, I sealed it with furniture wax—not too thick, or the surface will stay sticky.
And yes, I’ve accidentally scratched it with a key before—no major damage, small spots can be easily repaired. So: yes, it works, but chalk paint on KALLAX doors does require a bit of care and attention. 😉 Maybe ideal for DIY enthusiasts who like to refresh their style from time to time.
In short: Chalk paint can be applied to KALLAX doors, but only with proper preparation – lightly sand and use a bonding primer.
Unsealed, it is not durable. For everyday use, it must be sealed with furniture wax or clear varnish.
Without sealing, the paint will quickly chip or become patchy, especially at the edges or in humid conditions.
If you want a quick and durable finish, it's better to use an acrylic dispersion paint designed for furniture.
