I have recently carried out several repairs on my Ikea Besta furniture, especially at the connection points, where the original screws tend to wear out or fail relatively quickly. My question to the community is: based on your experience, which sets of screws work best for repairing Ikea BESTA, particularly to ensure long-lasting stability and improved load-bearing capacity? I am not just looking for a simple replacement but ideally screws with suitable dimensions and quality that fit the common connection points of BESTA directly. Any advice on materials, thread types, and installation tips is also very welcome.

For repairs on Ikea BESTA, I generally recommend using stainless steel screws with metric threads. The original screws are often in imperial sizes, so you may need to resort to suitable replacement sets from a hardware store or specialized suppliers. It is important to select the correct screw size—commonly M4 or M5 with a length of 20–30 mm (0.8–1.2 inches), depending on the type of connection. Using screws longer than the originals can also provide better holding strength in the particleboard panels. Torx heads are common for these furniture pieces, as they allow for better torque transfer. Overall, aim for a quality grade of at least 8.8 to prevent deformation.

I think the whole debate about the 'best screws' for BESTA is a bit overblown. Ikea furniture is simply not designed for lifelong use. If you really want stability, it might be better to avoid traditional screws altogether and instead rely more on wood glue or special dowels. Screw kits, no matter how well marketed, won’t solve the fundamental material issue.

I understand your point, but it’s important to make a distinction here: The original poster is specifically looking for screws, not alternative repair methods. To encourage a factual discussion, it would be helpful to know whether high-grade metric screws really perform better than the originals, or if other fastening systems (e.g., cam fittings) are preferable. Do you have any concrete experience with this?

That is certainly an option, but it requires that the furniture can still be completely disassembled and that the surfaces provide sufficient contact area. For repairs where only screws are being replaced, high-quality screws are actually the more practical choice. In addition, the thread profile is crucial – aggressive chipboard screws have advantages over smooth screws in this regard.

Metric screws, stainless steel, Torx drive. M4 or M5, length depending on location, longer than original. Done.
