Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble some BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to make sure I use the most suitable types of screws. My main concern is the stability and safety of the shelves, as I intend to store relatively heavy books and decorative items in them. Could you advise me on which types of screws—for example, regarding length, diameter, material, or thread type—are best suited to ensure optimal load-bearing capacity? I would also like to know whether the original IKEA screws are recommended or if alternatives from a hardware store might even be better. Additionally, tips on the wood quality of the shelves and how to avoid screws that could potentially damage the material would be appreciated. I look forward to your experience and recommendations!

Hello tekune, your question is really good and shows that you are considering the best method for fastening.

Basically, I recommend using wood screws with a diameter of about 4 to 5 mm (0.16 to 0.20 inches) for BILLY shelves, depending on the exact shelf size. The length should be at least 30 mm (1.2 inches), preferably 40 mm (1.6 inches) – this ensures a secure anchoring in the shelf base or side panel without putting too much stress on the back panel.

Many use the original screws from IKEA, which are usually simple chipboard screws. These are suitable for light to medium loads. However, if you want to store heavy books, it is worth using quality fine-thread wood screws made of stainless steel or galvanized steel. These not only provide better corrosion protection but also higher tensile strength, which is important for long-term stability.

That is indeed the case if you choose screws with an optimized thread and an appropriate length. Additionally, you should ensure that the screws do not split the thin material of the BILLY shelf. For more delicate areas, pre-drilling with a 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inch) drill bit can help protect the wood material and prevent future cracks.

One more tip: for mounting on the wall, it is essential to use suitable wall plugs and screws according to the wall type, otherwise the shelves could tip over. If you want, I can also give you recommendations here – or you can tell me what type of wall you have.

What are your specific load estimates? How many kilograms (pounds) per shelf should the screws be able to support?

I really like how detailed the answers here already are; it shows how much you’ve all engaged with the shelves.

I personally had a lot of trouble with the original screws at first. They often split the wood for me, especially when I tightened them too much.

That helped me a lot, along with being careful when screwing in to avoid putting too much pressure on the narrow edges.

My advice is also, for heavier loads, not to just fasten the screws to the shelf itself, but to properly anchor the shelves to the wall – this provides significantly more safety and stability. I once had a shelf that came loose under normal use until I installed proper wall plugs and stronger screws.

Maybe also worth mentioning: countersunk screws tend to work better for BILLY shelves because they sit flush in the wood and won’t catch when you adjust the shelves later.

I hope this helps a bit and encourages you. It’s really frustrating when the shelf wobbles or feels unsafe, but with the right screw choice, it works well!

For BILLY shelves, I recommend using 4x40 mm (0.16x1.57 inch) stainless steel countersunk wood screws. Always pre-drill with a 3 mm (0.12 inch) drill bit. Original screws are acceptable but often too short for heavy loads.

Hello tekune and everyone interested,

I would like to add that the types of screws used for BILLY shelves depend not only on the weight but also on how the shelves are used. For example, if you often move or modify the shelves, screws with a smooth and sturdy thread are advisable to minimize damage to the wood.

The original screws are sufficient if you use the shelves properly and don’t expect particularly heavy loads. For heavier weights, especially if you stack multiple shelves or have extra depth, professional wood screws with a full thread are better and usually available at hardware stores.

Another thing I recommend is using countersunk screws because they sit flush and eliminate safety risks from protruding screw heads.

By the way, I also advise securing the shelf with brackets after assembly, especially if there are small children in the household. This increases safety.

If you provide more specific details about your particular application, I can gladly recommend more precise screw types.
