Are there detailed and reliable guides for modifying the Ikea Hemnes furniture series?

I am mainly looking for tips and step-by-step instructions on how to modify or upgrade furniture from this series without significantly compromising stability or design. I am curious if such guides are officially provided by Ikea or if there are established community methods that are compatible with the materials used in the Hemnes furniture.

Does anyone know of sources, personal experiences, or detailed instructions that thoroughly describe the modification of, for example, dressers or shelving units from this series?

I hope there are people here who have already customized these furniture pieces or know how to do so safely without damaging them completely.

I am not aware of any official Ikea instructions for modifying the HEMNES series.

In the community, searching DIY forums or craft platforms often helps.

Usually, clamp and screw connections in HEMNES allow for relatively straightforward modifications.

Ikea does not officially publish instructions for modifying their furniture.

The HEMNES series is fundamentally designed with a modular structure, which makes modifications easier. For specific adjustments, the following approaches are recommended:

- Assessing material thickness and load-bearing capacity
- Avoiding drilling into load-bearing parts
- Using original fittings or compatible replacement components

There are numerous unofficial guides, especially describing the removal or installation of drawers and shelves, mostly in the form of blog posts or forum entries. Craftsmanship accuracy is crucial to maintain functionality.

I can relate to this question well, as I have personally modified several pieces from the HEMNES series.

Since Ikea does not provide official modification instructions, I usually rely on a combination of the original assembly manuals and specific craftsmanship skills.

For modifications, it is important to fully understand the joints – many HEMNES furniture pieces use dowel, screw, and tongue-and-groove connections. When carefully undone, these allow the parts to be taken apart and reassembled or extended.

Additionally, some DIY forums offer detailed reports on how to modify drawers or add extra shelves.

If you are planning larger alterations, I recommend practicing with test cuts or gluing joints before proceeding and increasing your material stock if necessary.

I completely agree. It seems there are hardly any official Ikea guides for conversions. The assembly manual is the best document to understand the basic structure.

Some time ago, I added drawer dividers to my HEMNES dresser. It really helped to carefully study the manual in order not to compromise the stability.

Practical tips:
- With some skill, screws can sometimes be placed in different locations
- Thoughtful planning is especially important before cutting or drilling anything

Did you follow any specific conversion plans?

Thank you, that is already very helpful. I am specifically interested in modifying HEMNES dressers, for example, to divide a drawer into several compartments or to implement better internal organizational solutions. I also want to visually enhance them with some additional work, without damaging the construction.

Do you have experience with how far such modifications can be done using simple tools commonly found at home? Or is it necessary to use special professional equipment? I’m trying to realistically assess my options before starting.
