Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet and am now attaching the doors. I've noticed that when closing the doors, there is a relatively loud rattling noise. My specific question is: How can I install Ikea Metod doors to ensure the closing is as quiet as possible?

I suspect the issue might be related to the hinges or the way the doors are mounted, but the Ikea instructions do not address this specifically.

Does anyone have tips on how to reduce noise later on, possibly through special adjustments, dampers, or additional materials?

I would appreciate any helpful advice, including how to adjust the doors or prevent vibrations.

Hello gotyrese,

Your issue is a common one when installing Ikea Metod doors. Here is a brief guide on how to approach the door installation to reduce noise:

- First, make sure the hinges are properly adjusted. Ikea Metod usually uses soft-close hinges that can be adjusted with screws.
- Check if the doors fit perfectly within the frame; slight misalignments can cause rattling.
- As additional cushioning, you can apply self-adhesive foam pads at the contact points (door frame, cabinet edge).
- For particularly noisy doors, it’s advisable to inspect the soft-close mechanism and, if necessary, readjust it or use purely mechanical dampers.

If you want, I can also provide more detailed advice on screw adjustments and hinge positioning.

That would be great, thanks! Specifically, I’m interested in how to optimally adjust the soft-close hinges because I feel like the doors slam shut a bit too hard and rattle as a result.

Are there any installation tips that can prevent the doors from becoming misaligned or developing play over time due to closing?

I’ve noticed with other kitchen units that the doors stop closing properly after a while.

Sure, here is a practical guide for optimal adjustment and quiet installation of Ikea Metod doors:

- Soft-close hinges have three screws: one for depth adjustment, one for lateral alignment, and one for height. Start by adjusting the pressure (depth setting) so that the door doesn’t slam shut but still closes properly.
- Small adjustments to the lateral screw help align the door flush with the cabinet frame, preventing friction that causes noise.
- Adjust the height screw to make sure the door sits parallel to the other doors.
- Additionally, you can attach damping strips to the inside of the cabinet frame to absorb energy and minimize vibrations when the door is closed.
- Check the pre-installed screws and tighten them slightly with the appropriate screwdriver if needed—loose fittings are often the cause of rattling.

In the long term, I recommend regularly checking and retightening the screws every 6 to 12 months. Wood expands and contracts depending on humidity, which can slightly affect the fit.

Would you like me to provide tips on which damping materials are best suited?

I would like to add some technical details about hinge installation for Ikea Metod and tips for noise reduction:

- The Ikea Metod hinge mechanism usually relies on a spring and damping system, which is adjusted by tightening or loosening the screws. A common issue is that the spring tension is set too high, causing the door to slam loudly.
- It is also important that the hinges click precisely into the included mounting plates and are not misaligned. Even a few millimeters can affect their performance.
- For an even quieter solution, you can attach self-adhesive silicone pads (e.g. as additional elements) to the inside of the door. These minimize the impact noise and provide gentle cushioning.
- If the doors rattle, this can also be caused by insufficient screw tightness in the cabinet body, especially if the material is not waterproof and has warped slightly over time.

One final recommendation: applying maximum torque when fastening can damage the thread, so proceed carefully and gradually.

You may also be able to purchase and replace the Metod dampers (called "Soft Closing Damper") separately if the originals no longer work well.

Good point, I have actually sometimes made the mistake of overtightening the screws.

Is there a guideline on how much force should be applied, especially with thinner metal sheets or at connection points?

Would it make sense to use a torque wrench in this case, or is that overkill for flat-pack kitchens like Ikea’s?

And one more question: Does it make sense to stick small foam strips between the door and the cabinet body during assembly to reduce vibrations?
