Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question: I own an Ikea Hemnes sideboard with several drawers that unfortunately close quite loudly. I would like to add damping to the drawers afterward without taking the entire piece of furniture apart or changing its appearance. Are there any proven methods or products to make the drawers close gently and quietly? I am particularly interested in experiences with installing dampers or soft-close mechanisms on the existing Hemnes drawers, as I don’t have access to original replacement parts from Ikea. I would appreciate any tips for suitable damping solutions that can be implemented by DIY enthusiasts without requiring special tools.

Hello enesfra,

I can definitely understand how annoying noisy drawers can be, especially when you value peace and quiet at home. I had a similar experience with my Hemnes dressers. At some point, I bought retrofit soft-close kits—but with Hemnes furniture, it’s a bit tricky because the edges of the drawers and the frame aren’t designed for those mechanisms.

A tip from me: there are small self-adhesive dampers (like silicone or rubber pads) that you can attach on the inside of the drawers where they meet the frame. This noticeably cushions the slamming—of course, it’s not a perfect solution but quick to do and invisible. For more comfort, you might need to replace the drawer slides, which is more work. Let us know if you try anything!

Hi enesfra,

I see you want to make your Hemnes drawers quieter without a complete overhaul – a classic challenge! 😉 A quick tip from me: soft-close adapters for drawers are usually designed to be fairly easy to install with screws on the side panels or underneath. Don’t worry, these little helpers are barely visible and ensure a smooth closing.

Sometimes you can also experiment with felt strips – just apply them to the critical contact points inside. The idea is a bit like disarming cat toys, but it surprisingly adds a lot of quietness. 📦👌

Good luck, and don’t forget: A quiet piece of furniture is like a good coffee – you only realize how much you need it once it’s there!

Hi enesfra, speaking from my own experience, you have to be a bit pragmatic and handy here. Hemnes drawers often use a simple wood-on-wood mechanism. What worked for me was installing small spring-loaded soft-close kits, which are relatively inexpensive and don’t add much bulk. The advantage is that you hardly need any tools—just a small screwdriver.

Also quite unobtrusive are self-adhesive damping pads, as FELOTAU already mentioned, but these tend to be more of a one-time fix. In contrast, the spring adapters noticeably improve both the feel and sound over time.

Bonus: This kind of modification gives a little sense of achievement—and noise-reduced Hemnes drawers are truly a blessing.

Regarding the question of how to retrofit soft-close mechanisms to Ikea Hemnes drawers, I would like to provide some precise facts. Hemnes furniture is primarily made of solid wood, uses simple sliding mechanisms, and does not come with factory-installed soft-close elements. Therefore, retrofitting is commonly done using soft-close retrofit kits or by attaching damping strips.

- Soft-close sets with spring mechanisms can be installed by mounting them in pairs on the inside of the drawer and the cabinet side.
- Alternatively, self-adhesive dampers made of silicone or rubber are available, which reduce noise at contact points.

Please note that this type of modification can be visually minimally invasive, but there is a risk that the drawers may become harder to operate if the mechanism is oversized. Careful selection of the kits is therefore advisable.

Simply stick self-adhesive silicone pads to the contact points. This cushions the impact without much effort.
