Hello everyone, I have been using my IKEA Malm desk and Malm dressers for some time now. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the surfaces are quite prone to scratches and minor damage, especially from daily use and occasional moving of items. Therefore, I am interested in effective methods to make Malm furniture more scratch-resistant or to better protect the surfaces without negatively affecting their appearance. Does anyone have good tips or experience with protective coatings, sealants, or special care products that really help with the typical MDF surfaces of the Malm series? Thanks in advance!
I would recommend trying a clear furniture polish or a special scratch-protection wax. These products create a thin protective layer and can help to conceal minor scratches. It is important to thoroughly clean the furniture beforehand and avoid using harsh cleaning agents.

One optional approach is applying a high-quality, clear polyurethane varnish specifically designed for furniture. It is recommended to apply 2-3 thin layers to make the surface more durable. Alternatively, a protective furniture film can be used, which is applied to the surface without altering its appearance.
These products may provide short-term relief but do not offer long-lasting protection, especially under heavy use.

Hey, just casually: Malm is pretty popular, but the surface can sometimes feel a bit rough. What I can recommend is the good old furniture wax pad! Just apply it in circular motions, it creates a thin protective layer and even gives a slight shine. 🙂
Yes, that is more professional, but who really wants to paint? It also works well without much effort, trust me! 😉

Thanks in advance for the initial suggestions. I’ve looked into the tips about the polyurethane finish. Can you tell me if it makes a difference whether I apply the finish with a brush or by spraying? Also, how much drying time should I allow between coats? Additionally, I’m curious if sealing affects the matte appearance that I like on Malm. With wax, I’m concerned it might become sticky, attract dust, or be difficult to clean. What are your experiences with this?

edisondan28 Sep 2022 09:32The application method of polyurethane varnish is indeed important: brushing offers more control but can leave visible brush marks, especially on matte finishes. Spraying provides a smooth, even result but requires a well-ventilated area and experience to avoid drips.
The drying time between coats is usually 4–6 hours, but ideally 24 hours to ensure optimal curing.
Yes, the finish can become slightly glossier. However, there are matte polyurethane varnishes that do not significantly alter the look.
Regarding furniture wax: it can attract dust and needs regular maintenance, but it is reversible and easy to work with.
