Hello everyone,

I have recently started experiencing a problem with my Malm bed from IKEA. Over the past few weeks, especially since the significant changes in temperature and humidity due to autumn, the bed has begun to squeak intermittently when lying on it. It’s not constant but occurs whenever I move or slightly change the load. I suspect that the “climate change” in the room plays a role here – that is, the drying out of the wood or shrinking and swelling caused by fluctuations in moisture.

Has anyone had similar experiences or any tips on how to eliminate or at least reduce the squeaking? I have already tried tightening all the screws, but without success.

Looking forward to your advice!

Try treating all the joints with wax or a silicone spray. Sometimes lubricating the friction points causing the noise helps.

Tightening screws is important, but also check whether the slatted bed bases are securely in place. Sometimes the squeaking comes from the slatted base, not directly from the bed frame.

Squeaking in wooden beds due to climate fluctuations is not uncommon. Wood expands with moisture and contracts in dry air, causing slight movements at the joints. It is important to systematically check all screws and, if necessary, use washers to improve their grip. Rubbing furniture wax on the contact points can also help reduce friction.

Additionally, maintaining indoor humidity at a constant level of around 50-60% can reduce the problem. A humidifier could provide a long-term solution in this case.

Hello sarson,

Your issue sounds typical for wooden furniture reacting to changes in humidity.

Here is a brief step-by-step guide you can follow:

1. Completely disassemble the bed or at least take it apart as much as possible to carefully inspect all the wooden joints.

2. Check if all screws and dowels are tight. Be aware that sometimes the holes in the wood parts may have widened due to movement – in this case, wood glue plus new dowels can help.

3. Lightly sand the contact points between wood pieces with fine sandpaper to smooth rough areas that may creak when the wood swells.

4. Rub the wood joints with substances like beeswax or paraffin. Avoid oily products that could damage the wood.

5. If possible, use washers with screws to better distribute the pressure.

6. Pay attention to the indoor climate: as mentioned, maintaining stable humidity levels is important.

These steps should significantly reduce the noise from your bed. If you can describe more precisely where the squeaking comes from (headboard? frame? slatted base?), I can provide more specific advice.

Thank you for the detailed reply, Guyju! That is very helpful. To be precise, the squeaking comes from the central part of the bed frame, where the side panels meet the middle section. So it seems that this connection is the one moving slightly.

I don’t have advanced tools at home but would at least like to systematically check the screws again and make any necessary adjustments. Do you have a recommendation on which type of wax or lubricant I should start with? Beeswax sounds good, but where can one find it as affordable and easy to handle as possible?
