Hello everyone, I have several Malm dressers from Ikea, which I really like in terms of design and storage space. However, I have noticed that they don’t seem very stable when loaded or when opening and closing the drawers, and they can sometimes wobble or tip, especially if they are not fixed to the wall.

I am now looking for sustainable and secure solutions to stabilize my Malm dressers without having to completely dismantle them or carry out major modifications. It would be especially helpful if someone could share their experience with additional reinforcements, wall mounts, or retrofitting support elements.

Are there any recommended components or methods specifically suitable for the Malm series to improve their stability? And does anyone have tips on how to enhance safety, particularly if there are children in the household?

I look forward to detailed and practical advice and experiences. Thank you!

The Malm dressers from Ikea are known to become unstable under load if they are not anchored to the wall.

To improve stability, I recommend first using the standard wall anchors provided by Ikea and installing them correctly. These prevent tipping when the drawers are pulled.

Additionally, the dresser can be reinforced on the inside of the back panel with metal brackets. Metal corner brackets increase torsional rigidity and prevent wobbling. These should be fixed using chipboard screws about 15–20 mm (0.6–0.8 inches) long to avoid damaging the material.

If stabilization from below is desired, small adjustable feet with rubber pads can also be added to compensate for uneven flooring and provide better support.

Important: In households with children, wall anchoring is mandatory! According to safety standards, furniture with a high tipping risk must be properly secured.

In short: install wall anchors, reinforce inside corners with metal brackets, and optionally add adjustable feet. This way, the dresser will be solid and safe.

I would recommend always using wall anchors first before doing anything else. After that, you can reinforce them inside with simple metal brackets. Done.

I understand the issue with the stability of the Malm series, but shouldn’t we also question why Ikea doesn’t solve this better from the start?

Sure, that’s what the standards say, but isn’t that kind of an admission of a subpar design?

For example, I used flip-top panels made of plywood, which are fixed inside with brackets. This adds weight, makes the dresser more stable, and means you don’t necessarily need to anchor it to the wall.

If you want comfort without wall mounting, you have to improvise a bit. Malm is a mass-produced product, so you can’t expect miracles. But if you’re willing to do some DIY, try using thicker panels and metal brackets together with shelves—this creates a completely different level of stability.

I can definitely understand that you’re looking for a method that’s not too complicated. I had the exact same issue with my Malm dressers, especially in the children's room, where safety is obviously a top priority.

What worked well for me was adding self-adhesive anti-slip pads under the feet in addition to the Ikea wall anchors. This way, the dressers don’t slide anymore when the kids use the drawers energetically.

I also screwed small metal brackets inside the corners, which reduced wobbling without having to take the dressers apart.

For me, especially with children, wall mounting is really necessary, even though I was initially skeptical. In the end, it was the best compromise between safety and effort.

I hope this helps you. If you like, I can gladly share details about the products I used!
