Hello everyone,

I have purchased several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces and want to protect them long-term from wear, scratches, and other signs of use. I understand that Hemnes is mostly made of solid pine wood, which is more durable than particleboard but can still be quite sensitive to daily use and minor accidents.

Therefore, my question is: What methods or products do you recommend to effectively protect the surface of Ikea Hemnes furniture from wear, scratches, and small damages? Are there care products, protective films, or specific techniques that help preserve the wood over time without negatively affecting its appearance or feel? I would like to know practical advice for everyday use, for example on drawers, tabletops, or edges that often experience heavy use.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Janistar,

to protect your Ikea Hemnes furniture from wear and scratches in the long term, I recommend the following approach:

- Regular cleaning is important to remove dirt particles that act like sandpaper. Use a mild wood care oil or a product specifically designed for lacquered wood.
- To protect the surface, special furniture waxes or wood oils are suitable, as they create a thin protective layer without taking away the natural wood character. Note: Hemnes furniture is usually lacquered, so test the product first on an inconspicuous spot.
- For heavily used edges or surfaces, you can apply self-adhesive transparent protective films (e.g., furniture films) for additional protection, although these are not always visually ideal.
- Use felt pads under decorative items or lamps placed on the furniture.

A common mistake is using aggressive products or abrasive cloths, which can cause small scratches. Therefore, avoid rough sponges or harsh cleaners.

Summary: Keep the furniture clean, treat it with appropriate care products, use protective films or pads if needed, and avoid aggressive cleaning methods.

Hey Janistar!

I think this is a very important topic because Hemnes furniture is really beautiful but unfortunately also quite delicate. 😊

I always use furniture wax along with felt pads under everything placed on the table. I also make sure that no sharp objects fall directly onto the surface or cause scratches when moving items around. My tip: feel free to place a thin, nearly invisible cloth over heavily used areas, for example if you do a lot of crafting or writing.

Don’t get discouraged— with a little care and regular maintenance, the furniture will last forever!

In addition to the measures mentioned, it is important to understand the difference between painted and oil-treated wood surfaces. Hemnes furniture is mostly painted, which provides a durable protective layer, but small stone chips or coarse sand can still cause scratches.

The use of silicone-based furniture polish should be avoided on painted surfaces, as it can damage the paint. Instead, water-based care products without aggressive solvents are recommended.

It is also advisable to protect frequently used surfaces such as tabletops with wipeable materials, without attaching films or covers directly to the furniture, as adhesives can damage the surface.

Be cautious with moisture – excessive wiping with wet cloths can cause damage to the paint.

Use furniture pads under heavy dishes.

Avoid sharp edges and fit felt glides on chair legs.

Wipe up wet spots immediately.

Exactly, this is one of the most effective protective measures! Especially with Hemnes furniture, where the surface is sturdy but still vulnerable. Felt pads prevent direct scraping on the wood and thus minimize scratches.

I would also recommend planning the furniture arrangement so that pieces don’t need to be moved frequently. Even small movements can easily cause scratches, even if the floor is protected. Additional protection under the legs can help, but it’s best to keep furniture in place whenever possible.

One more tip: vacuuming with a furniture attachment instead of sweeping reduces scratches caused by sand particles.
