Hello everyone,

I noticed some minor damage on one of the shelves of my BILLY unit, mainly surface scratches and slight chipping along the edges. Since the shelf is otherwise intact, I would prefer not to order replacement parts or replace the entire board.

My question to all: What is the best and most lasting way to repair small damages on BILLY shelves? Are there specific products or techniques to smooth or touch up the surface so the damages are barely visible? It is also important to me that the repair process is not too time-consuming and does not completely damage the veneer.

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!

Hey,

I can definitely give you a few tips on how to spruce up your BILLY! 🙂

For small scratches or dents, the best option is usually furniture touch-up markers or repair pens that come in wood tones. They’re quick to apply, dry fast, and do a good job of concealing the imperfections. It’s important to clean and dust the affected area lightly beforehand.

For longer open cracks or minor chips along the edges, I recommend using wood filler in a furniture wood color. These can be applied easily either by spraying or with your finger, and after drying, you can gently sand the area. Then apply a thin layer of clear varnish or furniture polish – this helps to make the repair less noticeable and protects against further damage.

One thing to keep in mind: since BILLY shelves usually have a melamine coating, how well the repair blends in depends a bit on the color. But it’s worth trying! Good luck – with a little patience, it will look great again soon. 🙂

Exactly.

First, clean the area, then apply the wood filler, let it dry, and lightly sand the fine spot.

To finish, seal with furniture care lotion or clear varnish.

It’s great that you don’t want to get rid of your BILLY shelf right away!

A while ago, I bought a small furniture repair kit that includes markers, filler, fine sandpaper, and different waxes.

I’ve already fixed several scratches on furniture with it – especially on shelves, it really makes a difference!

My advice: after applying filler or markers, always allow some time for drying, otherwise the result won’t be as visible. Waxes give the perfect final touch for that typical wood look.

Good luck, I’m sure it will work! 🙂
