Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from Ikea at home and am considering how to adapt them to be more child-friendly. I’m thinking about aspects such as safety (covering sharp edges), stability in case of climbing, ease of use for children, and a child-appropriate appearance. I’m also interested if anyone has practical experience with special protective coatings, padded edges, or adding doors and privacy panels.

How can you modify a Billy shelf to make it child-friendly while keeping it sturdy, safe, and appealing for children? I’m open to all ideas, from simple to creative solutions. Thanks in advance for your tips!

The most important thing is anchoring the unit to the wall to prevent tipping. Then you can cover the sharp edges with foam profiles. For aesthetics, colorful doors or adhesive film are good options. Done.

Hello Godan56,

first of all, a very well-structured question, which makes it easier to provide answers 😊. To make your Billy shelf child-friendly, I would recommend the following aspects:

1. Safety: As Klakar mentioned, the shelf should be securely anchored to the wall to prevent tipping, which is especially crucial for children’s safety. Additionally, edge protectors made of foam or silicone can be applied all around to prevent injuries.

2. Stability: Make sure not to overload the shelf. You can reinforce the shelves, if necessary, with additional boards.

3. Appearance and accessibility: For small children, doors that are easy to open and close are useful. Plexiglass panels as a shield can help keep the contents visible but protect against unwanted access.

4. Creativity: A child-friendly redesign, for example by painting the shelf doors or using colorful stickers, makes the piece of furniture more attractive.

Have you already considered using special child safety locks? They are helpful if you want to securely lock certain compartments.

I hope this gives you some good pointers.

Hey, I think that’s a great question! My tip: just add colorful magnetic doors and soft edge protectors—for safety and fun.

Also, you can decorate the shelf together with your kids by painting or sticking on it. It’s fun and creates a sense of family pride 💪. This way the shelf develops character, and the little ones feel really comfortable with it.

One more insider tip: non-slip anti-tip brackets help if a toddler tries to climb or accidentally bumps into it in the heat of the moment. That way, everything stays safe and you can stay relaxed :-)

That’s really important! Also, I like practical door handles made of soft material – if children will be using the doors, the handles need to be slip-resistant and safe.

Oh, and you can also equip small compartments with baskets and boxes. That way, the child learns organization through play, and the shelf still looks cozy.

I think that’s great too; it keeps the shelves from looking too “babyish” and makes the room feel open. Adding child-friendly colors on top of that is a perfect match.
