Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble some of the popular IKEA Billy bookshelves soon and would like to get a realistic estimate: How long does it typically take to fully assemble a Billy bookshelf? I mean the entire process, from unpacking, sorting the parts, assembling, to final positioning and adjustments.

I want to make sure I can plan realistically, especially if I need to assemble several shelves one after another. Are there differences depending on the shelf size or experience level? I look forward to your estimates and any tips on how to speed up or simplify the assembly process.

If you build multiple shelves, make sure to take breaks; otherwise, concentration often suffers, which leads to mistakes.

Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more! I once assembled four BILLY shelves in a row, and by the third one, I was really close to a breakdown ;-)

Seriously though, short breaks really help, especially considering how many small parts need to be screwed together. And if kids or your partner have questions, taking breaks becomes even more important.

I would also say: It’s better to allow extra time, especially if you’re tackling a project like this for the first time 🙂

For multiple shelves, you should plan at least half an hour per piece.

That sounds realistic. Having a bit of fun helps too, so the time just flies by almost on its own!

I’m usually in a good mood when assembling furniture, at least most of the time 🙂

This shows how important it is to watch out for fatigue. Mistakes caused by inattention can be major time wasters that significantly extend the overall process.

I’d also like to mention that some special BILLY versions (e.g., with doors, glass fronts, or special shelves) can differ—these might require 15-20% more time.

How many shelves are planned in total, and are they mostly standard models or the variants with extras?

Basically, a maximum of 1 hour per shelf, usually closer to 45 minutes.

If you are assembling multiple shelves, make sure to have your tools ready and keep the workspace tidy, as this saves time.

Thank you all for the detailed answers and tips!

For the current project: there are five standard BILLY shelves, 202 cm (79 inches) tall, without doors, only with adjustable shelves.

I will estimate about 45 to 60 minutes per shelf and make sure to include breaks, especially to maintain concentration.

I’m still wondering if you have any tips on how to optimize the preparation? For example, specific organization methods for the screws or proven workflows? I’m open to any input to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible.
