Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to redesign my home and am very interested in the IKEA Platsa shelves, especially because of their modularity and flexible interior space. My specific question is whether the Platsa shelves from IKEA are available without a back panel or if the back panel always comes standard and cannot be removed.

My main concern is the possibility of using the shelves as room dividers or open on both sides, where a back panel might be obstructive.

Can anyone confirm if IKEA Platsa shelves are offered without a back panel or if the back panel is mandatory? Are there alternative solutions, for example, a back panel that can optionally be left out or replaced?

Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions!

The Platsa shelves come standard with a back panel, which can be removed. IKEA does not sell the back panel separately for Platsa, but you can leave it off. However, without the back panel, the shelf is less stable.

For clarification: The Platsa series is designed so that the back panel does not necessarily have to be installed. Its main purpose is to provide stability and additional rear protection, but it can easily be removed if you want to use the shelving unit open on both sides.

However, there are no backless modules sold directly by IKEA. So, you simply leave out the back panel during assembly if you do not need it.

It should be noted that stability will be reduced without the back panel, so wall fastening is recommended. Some users also add their own back panels or decorative elements to close gaps or customize the appearance.

In summary: Platsa shelving units without back panels are possible but are not sold as standalone products and require some care during assembly.

Thanks for the clarification. So, that means you can’t buy the back panel individually in-store or online, but only as part of the set, right?

Could that theoretically mean the back panel is always included as a building component, but it’s optional to install it? That’s how I understand it at least.

Are there any experiences here regarding the loss of stability? Would you need to secure the Platsa units differently, for example, by attaching them to the wall more often?

I can confirm that the back panel is included as standard in the set but can be omitted.

Without the back panel, the shelf is less stable and should definitely be secured to the wall.

IKEA also provides safety instructions for this.

An alternative is to make custom back panels from wood or glass, which can be visually adapted.

I used Platsa without a back panel as a room divider and found it visually very appealing and open. However, I initially had concerns about stability, which were well addressed by securing it to the wall and using sturdy shelves.

It feels a bit unusual at first without the back panel, but you quickly get used to the more flexible use and the different spatial sensation.

If anyone is considering leaving out the back panel, I would recommend being prepared to use extra fasteners and to carry out the assembly more carefully.
